This once again raises many thoughts about the urgency of changing teaching and learning methods in the new context.
Seven years ago, in a talk at the TED Conference in April 2017, Japanese artificial intelligence (AI) expert Noriko Arai shared about the Todai Robot. This is a product programmed to participate in the entrance exam of one of the most prestigious universities in Japan - Tokyo University.
Although the Todai Robot did not score high enough to be admitted to the school, it still scored better than 80% of the students who took the exam. The entrance exam to the University of Tokyo consists of seven different sections, including math, science , English, as well as a 600-word essay.
The past seven years have marked the exponential growth of technology, especially AI, so it is understandable that ChatGPT accurately solved the 2024 high school graduation math exam.
I copied the article AI solves math in Tuoi Tre newspaper into Google Gemini with the question "If AI can solve math like that, how should students learn math, how should teachers teach math?". And the result was almost all the answers that Gemini provided.
The advent of AI and its ability to solve problems raises many questions for both students and teachers about how to effectively learn and teach math in the future.
Here are some analysis and recommendations:
For students
Changing learning mindset : Instead of just focusing on memorizing formulas and solving math problems according to models, students need to practice logical thinking, critical thinking and creativity to solve problems flexibly.
Use AI as a support tool : Students can use AI to look up information, explain difficult mathematical concepts, practice solving problems, and receive feedback. However, it should be noted that AI is only a support tool, not a complete replacement for learning and practicing thinking.
Develop other skills : In addition to mathematical knowledge, students need to develop other skills such as communication skills, teamwork skills, technology skills... These skills will help students succeed in their studies and life.
For teachers
Innovative teaching methods : Instead of just teaching by traditional methods, teachers need to use new, creative and modern teaching methods. Teachers can useeducational technology, learning projects, and practical activities to help students learn more effectively.
Assess students holistically : Teachers need to use a variety of assessment methods to assess students holistically, including assessing knowledge, skills, attitudes and behaviors.
Equip yourself with AI knowledge and skills : Teachers need to equip themselves with AI knowledge and skills to be able to use AI effectively in teaching and learning.
In June 2024, I had the opportunity to participate in a training program for teachers of secondary schools, colleges and vocational colleges on improving the capacity of teachers. A question I often ask the students is: "What is the most important task of a teacher?". The answer I received most often is: "Imparting knowledge to students".
Obviously, the above suggestions from AI are worth thinking about the goals of learning and teaching, thereby quickly making changes in learning (of students) and teaching (of teachers) to adapt to the new context.
AI solves math problems in seconds, 100% accurate
After finishing the math exam, the 2024 high school graduation exam, many people entered the exam questions for ChatGPT to solve. Surprisingly, the answers were available within seconds.
The fact that AI solved the math test so quickly surprised everyone and made them doubt whether the answer was correct or not. Tuoi Tre sent the math test code and answer that ChatGPT had just solved to a math doctor, who has many years of experience teaching math, to verify the information.
After carefully reviewing the answers to the questions in the exam, this expert commented: "ChatGPT not only chose the correct results but also provided detailed solutions. All solutions are correct and the theoretical analysis is logical."
