Artificial intelligence (AI) is being applied more and more widely in Vietnam, however, the Vietnamese language used in AI is still unnatural and not standardized.
The above is the comment of Mr. Tran Viet Hung, Founder & CEO, AI for Vietnam Organization, at the launching ceremony of the 2025 Innovation Challenge Program organized by the Vietnam National Innovation Center (NIC - Ministry of Finance ) in coordination with Meta Group on March 14.
Deputy Director of the National Innovation Center Vo Xuan Hoai introduces the ViGen project
This year’s program focuses on the ViGen project, which strives to create a high-quality open-source Vietnamese dataset for training, evaluating, and thereby improving the performance of large language models (LLMs), helping AI models better understand Vietnamese culture, context, and expressions. The project contributes to overcoming the shortcomings of Vietnamese in AI that Mr. Hung mentioned above.
Mr. Vo Xuan Hoai, Deputy Director of the National Innovation Center, said that this project is expected to enhance the presence of Vietnamese in the AI development process, while contributing to promoting the digital economy to develop rapidly and sustainably.
Mr. Hoai emphasized that AI is transforming the world, so developing large-scale, high-quality, open-source Vietnamese datasets for AI training and evaluation has become an urgent priority. The development of the ViGen project aims to turn AI into a powerful tool for all Vietnamese people and make Vietnam a global AI powerhouse.
According to Mr. Vo Xuan Hoai, the ViGen project originated from a three-way cooperation between Meta Group, NIC and the organization "AI for Vietnam". With this project, AI models will support Vietnamese naturally and comprehensively from the core to unlock the potential of AI applications in Vietnam. The ViGen project also contributes to ensuring that AI development in Vietnam is consistent with cultural values and ethical standards in Vietnam.
Sharing more specifically about the project, Associate Professor Dr. Nguyen Truong Thang, Director of the Institute of Information Technology (Vietnam Academy of Science and Technology), said that to put it simply, we will "teach" Vietnamese language to AI. According to Mr. Thang, if AI is built on an open source platform, we can teach and train AI and it will absorb information very quickly.
"With the help of open source code, we can approach and train to make AI more Vietnamese, standardize Vietnamese" - Associate Professor, Dr. Nguyen Truong Thang said.
Mr. Yann LeCun, Vice President, Chief Artificial Intelligence Architect of Meta Group, assessed that the ViGen project and the Vietnam Innovation Challenge not only aim to promote technology, but also aim to build an inclusive AI future, honoring and integrating Vietnam's unique cultural and linguistic heritage.
