The year 2024 marks a major turning point for the English teaching and learning market, witnessing a series of important changes from policies, teaching methods to the technology explosion.

Notably, the regulation that English will no longer be a compulsory subject in the high school graduation exam in 2025, along with the determination of the Politburo and the Government to make English the second language in schools, is a highlight.

AI REVOLUTION

According to Master Tran Thanh Vu, PhD student at the Faculty of Education, Durham University (UK), another trend is that the IELTS fever continues as this exam has become the "gold standard" for assessing English proficiency. "The IELTS test preparation market is expanding, even spreading to generaleducation when many foreign language centers cooperate with education departments to train IELTS teachers," Mr. Vu noted.

In addition, another notable trend in 2024 is the sharp increase in the number of "switching" English teachers. These are people from other fields who switch to teaching English, mainly to meet the growing demand of the test preparation market, especially IELTS. "The development of "switching" teachers, although bringing abundant human resources, also requires management agencies to build a stricter quality control system," shared Master Vu.

According to Mr. Vu, artificial intelligence (AI) is creating a revolution in the field of education globally and Vietnam is no exception. Smart foreign language learning applications such as Duolingo, ChatGPT or AI-based platforms are becoming increasingly popular. Some foreign language centers in Vietnam have also begun to integrate AI into teaching, from personalizing lesson content to building automatic tests.

"However, to fully exploit the potential of AI, teachers need to be trained to use this technology as a support tool instead of completely depending on it. AI is predicted to become a decisive factor in shaping the future of foreign language teaching in Vietnam," Master Vu emphasized, adding that teaching and learning English is not only a school's story but also a common responsibility of the whole society.

INCREASING DEMAND FOR LEARNING ASIAN LANGUAGES

Besides the English teaching and learning market, many other foreign languages are also gradually increasing in attraction. As for Chinese, Mr. Lang Quang Du, Deputy Director of the FIOH International Study Abroad and Study Center ( Hanoi ), shared that the number of students coming to his unit has increased steadily over the years by about 10-15%. "The main demand is to find job opportunities, promotions, business or study abroad," said Mr. Du.

According to Mr. Lang Quang Du, the teaching market this year is increasingly competitive because the demand for learning Chinese is increasing. Another notable trend is that many young people from primary school have started learning Chinese, showing that this language is gradually gaining popularity as much as English in terms of learners, he commented.

Mr. Tran Thien Van, CEO of Zila Education (HCMC), also said that the Korean language teaching market is growing in both the number of centers and learners. However, according to him, Korean is a niche market, so not many units have invested large resources like English, and that is also the reason why current Korean teaching methods are mainly based on personal experience.

Mr. Van paid special attention to the technology factor in teaching and learning foreign languages. Specifically, thanks to the development of technology and the achievements of English teaching applications (apps), some Korean teaching units have begun to apply AI in training. "Korean teaching apps are gradually improving and better meeting the needs of learners. However, the development of new technologies still has many limitations," Mr. Van acknowledged.

The CEO of Zila Education (HCMC) added that his company is developing an online Korean self-study platform. "At the same time, we are also using online tools to supplement the direct learning process to improve teaching efficiency," Mr. Van shared.
