Heavy damage, schools devastated after storm number 5
Typhoon Kajiki, which hit the Central region, not only caused great property damage but also put the education sector of Ha Tinh in a state of alarm. Despite proactively implementing early response measures under the direction of the Department of Education and Training, many schools in the area were still seriously affected, with huge damage to facilities, making preparations for the new school year difficult.
At Nghi Xuan High School, nearly 100 trees on campus were knocked down by the storm, causing 600 meters of fence to collapse and damaging the parking area for teachers and students. The stage roof, LED board and gymnasium were completely collapsed.
Meanwhile, Nghi Xuan Vocational Education and Continuing Education Center (Nghi Xuan Commune) also suffered heavy damage with 400 meters of fence collapsed, the roof of the garage, workshop and classrooms was blown off about 20 square meters. More than 50 sets of doors in the classrooms and workshop were completely damaged, and trees were scattered.

Equally serious is the situation at Dinh Ban Primary School (Thach Khe Commune), where both campuses were almost completely destroyed. Principal Hoang Thi Tuyet said that at noon on August 25, the entire roof of the second floor of campus 2 was completely blown away. By the afternoon of the same day, when the wind changed direction, the outdoor practice area - a new project with an investment of more than 100 million VND - was also severely damaged. Some classrooms had broken glass, rainwater flooded in, damaging desks, chairs and teaching equipment. Campus 1 also had its entire roof on the second floor blown away, the concrete column system completely collapsed and more than 50 meters of the fence collapsed.

Early this morning (August 26), taking advantage of the rain to stop, many teachers voluntarily returned to school, cutting down fallen trees, cleaning the school yard, and cleaning classrooms. Ms. Tuyet choked up and shared: “It is heartbreaking to see the devastated school. With the current workload, the upcoming school opening ceremony will probably have to be postponed for a few days, or it may not be on time.”

Mai Phu Kindergarten (Mai Phu Commune) is in a similar situation. The entire roof of 8 functional classrooms was completely damaged by the storm. Ms. Phan Thi Bao - Principal of Mai Phu Kindergarten said that after more than 20 years of working, this was the first time she witnessed such serious damage. The main doors and windows of some classrooms were severely damaged, especially class 5B and class 4-year-old A. The playground with ball house and stairs were also completely destroyed. The 20-meter long fence was blown down by the wind, many items could not be reused.

What worries the school leaders the most is that the electrical system is completely broken, seriously unsafe. On the morning of August 25, when checking the classrooms, teachers discovered that all the electrical lines were broken. If they were not checked carefully and then reconnected, it could be dangerous for both students and teachers. That afternoon, the school contacted the electricity company to check and fix the problem before turning the power back on.

Meanwhile, water continues to flow from classrooms with blown-off roofs, forcing the school to mobilize teachers to urgently clean up. The blown-off iron and steel and corrugated iron roofs will be collected and handled by local forces. Despite great efforts, with the current level of damage, the possibility of organizing the school opening ceremony as planned is almost impossible.
Ms. Hoang Thi My, homeroom teacher of class 4A, said her classroom was one of the most severely damaged. Broken glass and water flooded in, completely destroying all the school supplies that she and her colleagues had painstakingly prepared during the summer vacation. “We took advantage of the early leave to decorate the classroom, make school supplies for the children, and reduce the financial burden on parents. Now we have to start all over again,” Ms. My sadly shared.
Mai Phu Kindergarten currently has 259 students with 10 classes and 24 staff and teachers. Such damage not only affects the facilities but also makes the preparation for the new school year more complicated and stressful.
Ha Tinh education sector makes all efforts to overcome the consequences of storm Kajiki
According to preliminary statistics, storm No. 5 has caused severe damage to the education sector in Ha Tinh. 40 preschool schools were affected with total estimated damage of up to 456.29 billion VND. 16 primary schools were damaged, with damage of about 3.4 billion VND. At the secondary level, 21 schools were affected with total damage of about 356.56 billion VND. 44 high schools were affected, with damage estimated at 19.112 billion VND.
In addition, 9 vocational and continuing education centers were affected with a total loss of about 850 million VND. In the secondary and college sectors, 5 educational institutions also suffered losses with a total value of about 1,336 billion VND.

Faced with this emergency situation, the Ha Tinh Department of Education and Training has implemented many synchronous solutions to respond to and overcome the consequences of the storm. Subordinate units are required to regularly monitor the weather situation, proactively inform staff, teachers, and students, and promptly propose plans to suspend school when there is a risk of flash floods and landslides. On-call work is maintained 24/7, with special attention paid to preserving facilities and teaching equipment, maintaining smooth communication, and implementing a full and timely reporting regime.

Currently, the entire sector is focusing resources on repair and damage recovery. The top goal is to quickly stabilize the situation, ensuring the best conditions for the opening ceremony as well as teaching and learning in the first days of the new school year. The Department has established 4 working groups to go to the grassroots to grasp the situation, direct the work of overcoming the consequences and preparing for the 2025-2026 school year.
Along with that, the Department of Education and Training of Ha Tinh also called for cooperation and support from all levels, sectors, organizations and the community to help schools overcome difficulties, recover quickly and ensure a safe and stable teaching and learning environment after natural disasters.
On the morning of August 26, Chairman of the Provincial People's Committee Vo Trong Hai inspected the damage caused by storm No. 5 and directed the recovery work. Accompanying him were Permanent Vice Chairman of the Provincial People's Council Tran Tu Anh and leaders of relevant departments and branches.
After checking and grasping the situation, Chairman of the Provincial People's Committee Vo Trong Hai requested local authorities to quickly count the damage and deploy the fastest storm recovery work. In the immediate future, the locality needs to mobilize local forces; police, military and border guards units must immediately deploy forces to urgently support the repair of schools, clean the learning environment, and ensure safety before the opening day.
