The European aircraft giant announced on June 19 that low-cost airline IndiGo (India) had ordered 500 A320s.
The deal “is a record single order in the history of commercial aviation,” Airbus said in a statement. The planes will be delivered between 2030 and 2035. The June 19 order brings IndiGo’s total Airbus orders to 1,330.
IndiGo CEO Pieter Elbers said yesterday that the order will help the company "continue to deliver on its mission to drive mobility, economic growth and social cohesion in India." 75% of IndiGo's flights are domestic.
Elbers predicts that India's economic growth and improved incomes will help the country's aviation market attract millions of new passengers.
According to its website, IndiGo was founded in 2006 and is the country’s leading airline by market share. Last fiscal year, IndiGo carried 86 million passengers.
Airlines have been scrambling to capitalize on India’s accelerating economy and booming population. Demand for flights is expected to soar. In February, IndiGo’s rival Air India ordered more than 470 planes from both Airbus and Boeing.
Tech companies are also taking advantage of this opportunity. Some have expanded production and opened new stores in India.
The International Monetary Fund (IMF) forecasts that the South Asian nation will have a growth rate that will surpass all advanced and major emerging countries this year. Accordingly, India's GDP could increase by 5.9%. The United Nations (UN) in April also estimated that India will surpass China to become the world's most populous country by mid-year, with 1.43 billion people.
