In an internal memo to employees on March 20, Amazon CEO Andy Jassy said the company planned to cut an additional 9,000 jobs in the coming weeks.

This will be the second-largest layoff in Amazon’s history, after the company announced it would cut 18,000 employees in January. In the announcement, CEO Jassy said the second phase of the annual plan was completed this month and will result in further job cuts. However, Amazon will still be hiring in a number of strategic areas.
As for why the decision to lay off staff was not announced immediately a few months ago, Mr. Jassy explained that not all teams had completed their analysis in time, and instead of rushing through the reviews without careful consideration, the company chose to announce the information as soon as the decision was made, so that everyone would be aware of the situation as soon as possible.
Earlier this year, Amazon announced it would cut more than 18,000 jobs, citing a weak economy and rapid hiring in recent years. That represents 6% of Amazon’s 300,000 white-collar workforce.
As of the end of September 2022, a total of more than 1.5 million people were working for Amazon, including warehouse workers, making it the second-largest private employer in the US, after Walmart Inc.
During the COVID-19 pandemic, Amazon has ramped up hiring to meet the boom in shipping demand, doubling its global headcount from early 2020 to early 2022. But Amazon is facing the risk of slowing growth as businesses and consumers cut back on spending due to soaring inflation.
