Amorim admits the truth about Man Utd's class before the match against Liverpool

(Dan Tri) - Coach Ruben Amorim admitted he does not know how long it will take for Man Utd to be able to compete equally with Liverpool in the Premier League, as the two teams are about to face each other at Anfield.

Since Man Utd last won the English title, Liverpool have won two Premier League titles under Jurgen Klopp, who also led the Reds to the Champions League in 2019, and under Arne Slot last season. Meanwhile, the post-Sir Alex Ferguson era has seen Man Utd win two FA Cups, two League Cups and one Europa League.

Asked if the upcoming match against Liverpool is a chance for Man Utd to prove the gap between the two clubs is closing, Amorim said frankly: "I don't know. Sometimes things change very quickly, but if you look at the history of both clubs, you can see that sometimes one team is winning and the other is going through a difficult period."

He continued: “That happened to Liverpool when Man Utd kept winning titles. And that happened to Man Utd when Liverpool had a lot of success. We have to admit that, to be honest with the fans, but we can win any game.

If we just focus on winning the next game - the most important thing - then we can do it. If we want to fight and reach Liverpool's level in the future, that's the target. I don't know how long it will take."

Amorim recalls the dramatic 2-2 draw when Man Utd visited Merseyside in January: “I remember we played well. It was a draw, and I was really sad when the game finished. In the end, we showed that we can compete with anyone.

I know this is a special game for the club, I know they are fighting for the title that we are aiming for. This is an opportunity for us to prove again that we are improving. We need to play better in both areas.”

Regarding the pressure of facing the top teams in the league, Amorim commented: “Perhaps the expectation and responsibility to win makes everything much more difficult.

When you play for big clubs, you need to win every game. Sometimes we struggle with that. Maybe when Man Utd don't have such high expectations, it's easier for the players to perform, but we need to change that."

Man Utd will play at Liverpool's Anfield Stadium at 10:30 p.m. on October 19 (Vietnam time) in round 8 of the 2025-26 Premier League. Before this match, the gap between the two teams was 5 points. Liverpool ranked second with 15 points, Man Utd ranked 10th with 10 points.
