In a Bloomberg Power On report, analyst Mark Gurman stated that Apple is developing a clamshell-style foldable iPhone. This device is separate from the book-folding model, which is expected to launch later this year.
"Apple is working on the next version of the foldable iPhone with a smaller, clamshell design," Gurman wrote.
Based on rumors, there are still several months before Apple launches its foldable iPhone, the highest-end model in the iPhone lineup. Although the first version hasn't been unveiled yet, Apple is already planning the next model.
A Bloomberg writer reports that the clamshell-style foldable iPhone will be smaller and more square than the book-shaped model. The device "is still a long way from a certain market launch," although progress could be faster if the first version sells well.
"Apple expects the first foldable iPhone to be successful enough to create real demand for the product line, making customers want more different styles and sizes, similar to what happened with the traditional iPhone," Gurman commented.
Clamshell-style foldable smartphones are currently one of the most popular types. Unlike book-folding smartphones (which expand the screen to the size of a small tablet), clamshell-style foldable smartphones, when unfolded, are the same size as a standard phone, and when folded in half, they become more compact for optimal portability.
Apple has just announced successful business results for the fourth quarter of 2025, with the iPhone 17 Pro and 17 Pro Max accounting for more than half of iPhone sales in December 2025. The company also reported record iPhone sales last year.
Despite its success with the traditional iPhone line, Apple is falling behind its competitors in the foldable smartphone market. Although not officially announced, rumors suggest the first foldable iPhone will launch later this year.
If commercialized, the clamshell iPhone would compete with many rivals, most notably Motorola and Samsung. Speaking to CNET , tech YouTuber Austin Evans expressed excitement about the clamshell iPhone.
"I've loved the clamshell design ever since Samsung first launched the Z Flip in 2020. To me, it's like an evolution of the conventional smartphone. While the book-folding style turns the device into a small tablet, the clamshell design shrinks the phone, making it easier to slip into a pocket," Evans shared.
Gurman's article reveals that Apple may also be producing a larger foldable iPhone. The first rumored foldable iPhone is said to have a 5.5-inch outer screen and a 7.7-inch inner screen.
