The Australian Government announced that it will provide Vietnam with an initial aid package worth 3 million Australian dollars (2 million US dollars), including humanitarian assistance, emergency relief supplies and other essential services to help overcome the consequences of Typhoon No. 3.
The first batch of emergency relief supplies arrived in Hanoi this evening, adding to relief efforts by the Vietnamese Government and the international community, through humanitarian partnerships with Australian NGOs.
Typhoon Yagi was the strongest storm to hit northern Vietnam in more than three decades. Continuous heavy rains in mountainous areas caused widespread flooding and landslides, causing loss of life and property.
“We are here to help Vietnam in any way we can,” said Australian Ambassador to Vietnam, Andrew Goledzinowski. “It is gratifying to have been able to quickly mobilize support to the hardest-hit areas in the hope of easing the immediate hardship for families and communities. We know there is a long way to go and we stand with Vietnam at this difficult time.”
Australia’s support will include services provided through the Australian Humanitarian Partnership, in collaboration with local organisations targeting the most affected communities and vulnerable populations. We are working to prioritise women, children and people with disabilities. The relief items include essential goods and hygiene kits.
Australia shares our thoughts and prayers with the Government and people of Vietnam for the loss of life caused by natural disasters. We extend our condolences to the families of those who have died or are missing. Australia appreciates the effective leadership of the Government of Vietnam in coordinating relief and emergency response activities in the affected areas.
At the same time, we are ready to support Vietnam in overcoming the consequences caused by storms and floods as well as in the recovery and reconstruction process.
