Adrian 'Maravilla' Martinez has a record release clause in Argentine football history. |
Racing Club shocked Argentine football by extending Adrian 'Maravilla' Martinez's contract until 2028, including a release clause of €122 million, the highest in the history of Argentine football.
Notably, Martinez is 33 years old this year but has shown brilliant form. He is second in the list of goalscorers in the Argentine National Championship and the top scorer of the Copa Sudamericana 2024 (the second-highest club tournament in South America, similar in scale to the Europa League in Europe), helping Racing win the championship.
The tough move from Diego Milito, Racing President and Inter Milan legend, is seen as a response to River Plate's interest. After selling wonderkid Franco Mastantuono to Real Madrid for €63 million, River targeted Maravilla Martinez as an alternative. However, Racing did not let up.
Milito not only kept his veteran but also sent a clear message to the big clubs that Racing is not to be trifled with. With this sky-high price, Maravilla Martinez became the first player in Argentina to have a release clause exceeding 100 million euros.
Racing has shown that they are an ambitious team, and are ready to play "fairly" with big names like River Plate or Boca Juniors on both the field and the transfer market.
