Messi is still happy at Inter Miami. |
Earlier this week, a shocking statement from Lluis Carrasco, a close advisor to President Joan Laporta, stirred up the Barcelona fan community when he said that Messi's return to his old club could significantly improve the financial situation.
According to Carrasco, the financial potential of Messi’s return lies in his global brand appeal. A 2023 Nielsen Sports study found that Messi’s presence at Inter Miami would add $500 million to MLS, demonstrating his remarkable influence.
If Messi returns to Barcelona, the deal could have a seismic impact, helping the club's revenue increase significantly through sponsorship, advertising and commercial contracts.
The $200- $300 million figure could easily be met through ticket sales, TV rights and sponsorship deals. A 2022 Deloitte report found Barcelona to be carrying 1.35 billion euros in debt, making the plan a major financial restructuring.
Obviously, this is still just a dream for Carrasco and the Barca financial team. Messi just signed a contract extension with Inter Miami until 2028 in October, with plans to move to the new stadium Miami Freedom Park.
With 71 goals and 44 assists in 82 games (according to Inter Miami statistics), he has helped the team's value increase by 30%. This achievement, combined with the development of MLS, shows that Messi has no intention of leaving anytime soon.
President Joan Laporta also recently spoke out to dismiss the possibility of Messi returning, calling it an unrealistic prospect.
