Boy's skull fractured by falling tree branch makes miraculous recovery after 67 days of treatment

2 months fighting death after serious accident

On July 14, a representative of Cho Ray Hospital (HCMC) informed about the health condition of TNPD (10 years old), the victim who was seriously injured by a tree branch falling in the middle of the road and had to be hospitalized for a long time.

Dr. Tran Huy Hoan Bao, Department of Neurosurgery, Cho Ray Hospital, said that more than 2 months ago when the accident happened, the child was brought to the hospital in a deep coma.

At the Emergency Department, the child received first aid, intubation, initial intensive care, a CT scan of the brain and a full body assessment. The scan showed brain contusion, diffuse cerebral hemorrhage, and bilateral skull fractures.

After that, the baby was taken to the Department of Resuscitation - Neurosurgery and received intensive resuscitation for 2 weeks, helping his health condition improve, he could breathe on his own and was transferred to the Department of Neurosurgery, in a state of brain damage, with fluid accumulation under the scalp on both ends.

Neurosurgeons coordinated with imaging specialists to diagnose the baby's skull fracture and dural damage, causing cerebrospinal fluid to leak out.

After accurately assessing the injury, the treatment team performed surgery to remove the bone embedded in the dura mater, sutured, reconstructed the dura mater, and monitored the post-operative period.

Ten days after surgery, the patient's consciousness improved, but there was a condition of ventricular dilatation. Doctors performed a second surgery to drain cerebrospinal fluid from the ventricles into the abdomen.

Currently, the baby's condition has improved significantly, he can recognize his family and follow medical orders slowly, but there are still some sequelae due to severe brain damage. It is expected that the baby will be discharged from the hospital, receive intensive care to recover neurologically at home and have a follow-up appointment as scheduled.

Present at the hospital when her child was about to go home, Ms. Hong Diem (PD's biological mother) shared that the child had been treated at Cho Ray Hospital since May 7th after an unexpected accident.

At first, the family thought their child only had a broken arm or leg, but when the doctor told them about their child's critical condition, Diem and her husband collapsed.

I hope my child can soon integrate into life, go to school, and be healthy enough to go to the hospital to thank the doctors in person," the mother emotionally shared.

As Dan Tri previously reported, on May 7, TNPD was taken to Cho Ray Hospital for emergency treatment in a deep coma.

Through consultation between specialties such as Diagnostic Imaging, Neurosurgery and Otolaryngology, the doctor concluded that the patient had subarachnoid hemorrhage, scattered brain contusions, diffuse cerebral edema and skull fracture.

According to D.'s father, on the afternoon of May 7, he drove his son from school in District 10 to his boarding house in District 6 on a motorbike. When the vehicle reached the Hung Vuong - Ngo Quyen intersection (District 5), he stopped at a red light.

At this time, a tree branch suddenly fell from above, hitting baby D. on the head, causing him to collapse and become unconscious. The father was hit in the back by the branch, causing him to become dizzy. Discovering that his son was seriously injured, he was assisted by people nearby to take the child to the emergency room.

It is known that the patient's parents are manual laborers, so the hospital fees for the child's treatment may be a burden for the family.

Immediately after receiving the information, Dr. Nguyen Tri Thuc, Deputy Minister of Health , in charge of managing and operating Cho Ray Hospital, directed to exempt all hospital fees for the above-mentioned child patient.
