(Dan Tri) - More than 200 cubic meters of rock and soil fell into the Bai Gio railway tunnel ( Khanh Hoa province), paralyzing the North-South railway line. As of the afternoon of April 13, authorities were still unable to clear the tunnel.
Workers are welding and reinforcing steel frames at the landslide area in Bai Gio tunnel. Meanwhile, the landslide continues, making troubleshooting and tunnel clearance difficult and dangerous. Bai Gio Tunnel (in Dai Lanh commune, Van Ninh district, Khanh Hoa province) is about 900m long, built by the French more than 90 years ago, and completed and put into use in 1936. The landslide was about 20 meters long, about 85 meters from the north entrance of the tunnel. Authorities have stepped in, and are expected to complete the reinforcement by the night of April 12. However, when the work was almost completed, a second landslide suddenly occurred with an estimated volume of about 50m3. There is underground water in this area so the remediation work is facing many difficulties. Mr. Le Quang Vinh, Director of Phu Khanh Railway Exploitation Branch, said that the landslides in this area continue, so it is not possible to determine the time to complete the repair work. Large steel bars continue to be transported inside by workers to serve the reinforcement of the tunnel. Authorities determined the location of the landslide in the tunnel under the National Highway 1 lane, the section running through Deo Ca. Traffic police of Khanh Hoa and Phu Yen provinces regulated and restricted vehicles passing through the landslide area, avoiding putting pressure on the railway tunnel area where the incident occurred. Many heavy vehicles were forced to turn around. Mr. Tran Minh Duy, Head of Customer Service Department, Nha Trang Railway Transport Branch, said that from noon on April 12 until now, the railway industry has supported the transfer of about 3,700 passengers from Tuy Hoa station (Phu Yen) to Gia station (Khanh Hoa) and vice versa. Mr. Thoai took the train from Nghe An to Nha Trang station (Khanh Hoa), said the transfer took more than 2 hours, the railway industry provided a lot of support to help the people. "This was an unexpected incident so the people happily accepted it. I hope the tunnel collapse incident will be resolved soon," Mr. Thoai said. Railway staff assist passengers with luggage. Mr. Nguyen Cong Thien, Head of Train SE12, said that passengers boarding the transfer train will be served free breakfast and lunch.
