According to information from Ho Chi Minh City National University, Prof. Dr. Nguyen Thi Thanh Mai, Vice President of this university, is one of two Vietnamese professors newly recognized as Academicians of the World Academy of Sciences (TWAS). The second person recognized is Prof. Dr. Nguyen The Hoang, former Vice Director of 108 Military Central Hospital.
Two professors were awarded official academicianships of the World Academy of Sciences at the 17th TWAS Conference held in Brazil.
Previously, at the end of 2024, Prof. Dr. Nguyen The Hoang and Prof. Dr. Nguyen Thi Thanh Mai were elected as academicians of the World Academy of Sciences.

Ms. Nguyen Thi Thanh Mai, born in 1974, from Quang Ngai , graduated in chemistry from Ho Chi Minh City University of Science (now University of Science, Ho Chi Minh City National University).
From 1998 to 2002, Ms. Mai worked as a teaching assistant at the Department of Analytical Chemistry, Faculty of Chemistry, University of Science (Ho Chi Minh City National University).
From 2002 to 2013, Ms. Mai was a lecturer at the Department of Chemistry, University of Science, and from May 2002 to September 2005, she was a graduate student at Toyama University of Medicine and Pharmacy, Japan.
From 2007 to 2012, Dr. Nguyen Thi Thanh Mai was the Deputy Head of the Chemistry Department; from 2009 to 2013, she was the Head of the Analytical Chemistry Department, Faculty of Chemistry, University of Natural Sciences (Vietnam National University, Ho Chi Minh City).
In January 2022, while serving as Vice Principal of the University of Natural Sciences, Prof. Dr. Nguyen Thi Thanh Mai was appointed to concurrently hold the position of Principal of the Gifted High School.
In June 2024, Ms. Mai was appointed as Vice President of Ho Chi Minh City National University.
Dr. Nguyen Thi Thanh Mai was recognized as an associate professor in 2014 and recognized as a professor in 2020.
Ms. Nguyen Thi Thanh Mai was awarded the Kovalevskaia Prize - an award named after the outstanding 19th-century Russian female mathematician Sophia Kovalevskaia for female scientists in the field of natural sciences in 2021.
Prof. Dr. Nguyen The Hoang is from Ha Tinh. He was awarded the title of Associate Professor in 2006 and recognized as a professor in 2008.
He was a member of the surgical team that performed the world's first double arm transplant in Munich in 2008 and directed the world's first hand transplant from a living donor in Vietnam in 2020.
Mr. Hoang was appointed Deputy Director of 108 Military Central Hospital in 2014, holding the position of Head of the Department of Orthopedics and Traumatology in Vietnam and is a leading expert in the fields of regenerative medicine, microsurgery and organ transplantation.
Prof. Dr. Nguyen The Hoang was awarded a number of awards such as: Nepomuc von Nussbaum Award (1997), APKO (2008), Karl Max von Bauerfeind (2008), VIFOTEC (2010), Alexander von Humboldt Research Award (2012), Government Award (5 times), and Award for Contribution to Public Health of the Royal Government of Cambodia (2018).
