Professor Nguyen Thi Thanh Mai becomes TWAS academician

GD&TĐ - Prof. Dr. Nguyen Thi Thanh Mai, Vice President of Ho Chi Minh City National University, has been officially recognized as an Academician of the World Academy of Sciences (TWAS).

On September 29 - October 2, at the 17th Conference of the World Academy of Sciences (TWAS), Prof. Dr. Nguyen Thi Thanh Mai - Vice President of Ho Chi Minh City National University was officially recognized as a TWAS Academician through the new member reception ceremony.

At the Certificate Awarding Ceremony, Prof. Dr. Nguyen Thi Thanh Mai and Major General, Prof. Dr., People's Physician Nguyen The Hoang were honored to receive the certificate from Prof. Dr. Quarraisha Abdool Karim - President of TWAS in the presence of more than 300 delegates who are scientists from all over the world .

This year, TWAS elected 74 new academicians, the highest number in the history of the organization's formation and development.

Of these, Brazil and China lead with 10 academicians, India has 9, Malaysia 7, South Africa 4.

Vietnam, Cuba, Egypt and the United States each have two representatives. The recognition decision takes effect from January 1, 2025, bringing the total number of TWAS academicians to 1,444.

Professor, Doctor, Meritorious Student Nguyen Thi Thanh Mai was born in 1974, from Quang Ngai .

She graduated with a degree in Chemistry from Ho Chi Minh City University of Science (now Ho Chi Minh City University of Science, Vietnam National University), was awarded the title of Associate Professor in 2014 and Professor in 2020.

Professor Mai is one of the leading scientists in the field of drug research from Vietnamese medicinal herbs, with many important contributions to the development of the medical industry.

The research team she led has successfully developed two products to support the treatment of gastrointestinal cancer and arthritis from domestic medicinal herbs.

To date, Professor Thanh Mai has published more than 80 prestigious international articles, marking the mark of Vietnamese science on the world map of medical and pharmaceutical research.

With her continuous contributions, she was honored to receive many noble awards such as certificates of merit from the Prime Minister, the Ministry of Education and Training, the "For the cause of education" commemorative medal and the Kovalevskaia Award - a prestigious award for female scientists in the field of natural sciences.

This year's TWAS conference is held under the theme "Building a sustainable future: The role of science, technology and innovation in global development".

The program includes scientific sessions, seminars, high-level discussions, scientific award ceremonies and welcoming ceremonies for new academicians.

This is a major international scientific forum, gathering outstanding researchers, contributing to promoting cooperation, sharing knowledge and shaping new directions for sustainable human development.

The fact that Professor Nguyen Thi Thanh Mai became a TWAS academician is not only a personal pride, but also a testament to the increasingly high position of Vietnamese science in the international arena.

TWAS (The World Academy of Sciences) is an international organization under UNESCO, established in 1983, bringing together more than 1,400 leading scientists from more than 100 countries.

The organization was officially recognized by the United Nations Secretary-General Javier Pérez de Cuéllar in 1985. It is currently an associate member of the International Science Council (ISC).
