Inside Russia's 'underground city' in Kherson

VnExpressVnExpress18/02/2024

The Russian army built a system of fortified tunnels in Kherson province to serve the soldiers' daily lives and protect them from attacks.

The tunnel system, three kilometers long and three meters deep, was built by the engineering force of the Dnieper Army to help Russian soldiers hide from artillery attacks and explosive-dropping unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs).

This building has all the necessary amenities such as electricity, water, heating, dining area, gym, bathroom, sauna... 6-8 soldiers share a room.

The canteen could serve 75 people at a time and served a varied menu, including pea soup, canned meat, buckwheat porridge, pasta and borsht, a traditional Russian red beet soup. Soldiers kept a cat to entertain themselves and catch mice, which tended to seek out warm spaces like trenches in winter.

Russia has not disclosed the exact location of the tunnel network, but it is likely located on the east bank of the Dnieper River. Experts say the area is open and difficult to hide in, so building a network of tunnels for soldiers to take shelter is a reasonable choice.
