Lien Chieu General Hospital - a bright spot in emergency treatment of acute coronary syndrome

ĐNO – After more than two years of implementing the “Red Alert for Acute Coronary Syndrome Emergency” model, Lien Chieu General Hospital has affirmed its important role as a “bridge” in the PCI Network – Da Nang system, contributing to shortening intervention time, reducing mortality and complications for cardiovascular patients.

Shorten the time to save the patient's life

From April 2023, Lien Chieu General Hospital in collaboration with the Department of Interventional Cardiology - Da Nang Hospital officially deployed the PCI Network model. Thanks to the inter-hospital connection system, each case of acute coronary syndrome when detected is "red alerted" and urgently handled according to standard procedures.

“As soon as we receive an alarm signal from the grassroots level, the cardiovascular intervention team at the upper level is immediately mobilized. We contact directly via the Zalo PCI Network group, sending all test data and images for colleagues to prepare for intervention. Thanks to that, patients coming to the PCI center can go straight to the intervention room, without wasting time repeating procedures and tests,” said Master, Doctor Dinh Van Thieu, Head of the Department of Emergency Resuscitation, Lien Chieu General Hospital.

According to Dr. Thieu, the “door-to-balloon” time – from the time a patient is admitted to the hospital until the coronary angioplasty – has been significantly reduced compared to before. This is the decisive factor in saving the lives of many critical cases.

Every minute of timely action saves a life.

Recalling a special case, Dr. Thieu said: a 55-year-old male patient was admitted to the hospital with severe chest pain, low blood pressure, and slow heart rate. The emergency team activated the red alert and sent information to the PCI center. After just over 20 minutes, the patient was taken to Da Nang Hospital and underwent emergency coronary angioplasty.

“The patient quickly stabilized and recovered well. Without PCI Network, the additional hours of repeated testing and procedures could have resulted in the death of this patient. Every minute of timely action means another life is saved,” Dr. Thieu shared.

Mr. Nguyen Van H. (55 years old, living in Lien Chieu ward), a patient who was just saved thanks to this model, was moved: “When I was admitted to the hospital, I had such chest pain that I could not breathe. In my head, I thought I would not survive, but the doctors here raced every minute, giving first aid and transferring me to the hospital very quickly. Thanks to that, I received timely intervention and recovered. I am truly grateful.”

Sitting next to him, Mr. H.'s wife choked up and shared: "I was very moved when I witnessed such a quick, smooth and professional emergency procedure. Thanks to that, my husband escaped danger and saved his life."

Not only Mr. H., many other patients have also been saved in similar situations. Mr. Le Van T. (Hai Van ward), who underwent emergency coronary intervention thanks to PCI Network, shared: “Previously, I was subjective and did not go for regular check-ups. When I had a heart attack, thanks to being given emergency care and transferred to the hospital quickly, I had a chance to live. After being discharged from the hospital, I completely changed my lifestyle, ate more scientifically and always advised my relatives to go for early heart check-ups to prevent disease.”

With its geographical location, Lien Chieu General Hospital becomes an important intermediate point, receiving and initially treating patients in Lien Chieu, Hoa Khanh, and Hai Van areas before transferring them to other hospitals.

“We are proud to be recognized as one of the highlights of PCI Network – Da Nang. The role of the grassroots level is very important: receiving, accurately assessing, activating red alerts and organizing safe transportation. Only when the first step is truly effective can the patient receive timely intervention,” Dr. Thieu emphasized.

According to Dr. Thieu, people need to recognize early signs of acute coronary syndrome such as prolonged chest pain, shortness of breath, cold sweats, etc. and go to the nearest medical facility immediately. Absolutely do not self-treat at home.

In parallel, prevention through a healthy lifestyle, controlling blood pressure, blood sugar, blood lipids, not smoking, limiting alcohol, and maintaining exercise helps reduce the risk of cardiovascular disease.

“We believe that PCI Network will be expanded not only in Da Nang but also in the Central region. This is a system with profound humanity, as each timely connection means another life is revived,” Dr. Thieu affirmed.

After more than two years, the model of "Red Alert for Acute Coronary Syndrome Emergency" has proven its effectiveness, becoming a testament to the synchronous coordination between the grassroots and upper levels. With the motto "Health care close to the people, peace of mind in care", and the trust from patients and their families, the medical team of Lien Chieu General Hospital is contributing every day to the common efforts of the Da Nang health sector: bringing the chance of life to patients from the very first minute.
