Da Nang hosts the first full-distance IRONMAN race: swim 3.8km, cycle 180km, run over 42km

After 10 years of hosting the IRONMAN triathlon, Da Nang will host the full distance event for the first time, with a 3.8km swim, 180km bike ride and 42.2km marathon. This is also the first time the full distance IRONMAN has been held in Vietnam.

On September 23, the Organizing Committee of the 2026 IRONMAN Vietnam Tournament officially announced information about hosting the full-distance IRONMAN triathlon. The event will take place in the coastal area of ​​Da Nang on May 10, 2026.

Athletes must conquer a 3.8km swim, a 180km bike ride and a 42.2km run.

The full-distance IRONMAN will be held in parallel with the IRONMAN 70.3 Da Nang - an event that has been held annually for the past 10 years.

According to Ms. Nguyen Thi Anh Thi - Vice Chairwoman of Da Nang City People's Committee, this is an important milestone in the journey of international integration, affirming the city's capacity to organize world-class sporting events. Da Nang City leaders said they will prepare plans so that the tournament is organized according to the highest standards.

"This is an opportunity for Da Nang to affirm its position, while encouraging a healthy lifestyle and spreading the image of Da Nang tourism to the world ," said Ms. Thi.

Speaking to Tuoi Tre Online , Mr. Nguyen Trong Thao - Deputy Director of the Department of Culture and Sports of Da Nang - said the decision to host the full-distance IRONMAN is a big milestone for local culture, sports and tourism.

According to him, over the past decade, the IRONMAN 70.3 Da Nang competition has contributed to promoting the community sports movement and enhancing the city's image.

Mr. Thao assessed that sports tourism is bringing great, long-term benefits to the community and tourism industry in Da Nang.

Including running races and triathlon competitions held annually, bringing in a steady stream of visitors each time they take place.

By becoming the first locality in Vietnam to host the full-distance IRONMAN, Mr. Thao believes that this milestone will contribute to developing a more diverse endurance sports ecosystem.

"Not only are there thousands of athletes participating in the tournament, but many also bring their families along for the tour. They stay in the city for a long time to learn, get familiar with the race track and experience other activities," said Mr. Thao.
