With the guidance of experts from Japan, on September 8, the Central Lung Hospital successfully performed endoscopic surgery to create a tracheobronchial stenosis for a 49-year-old female patient.

Dr. Dinh Van Luong, Director of the Central Lung Hospital, said that the female patient had a low-grade malignant lung cancer tumor. The tumor had invaded the upper and lower lobes of the left lung. With previous techniques, the patient would have had to have her entire left lung removed to remove all the cancer cells. However, with the endoscopic bronchial surgery technique for complex lung diseases, which was first taught to the Central Lung Hospital by experts from Japan, the female patient only had to have the lower lobe of her left lung removed and had her bronchi and blood vessels reconstructed during surgery.

Specifically, in the surgery for this patient, the doctors at the Central Lung Hospital released all the pulmonary arteries and veins, using special instruments to control the pulmonary arteries and veins. Next, the doctors cut the lobe of the lung with the invasive tumor, ensuring complete removal of the cancer cells. After that, the doctors created a bronchial reconstruction into the left main bronchus, creating a vascular reconstruction for the patient.

“With the world 's most advanced techniques instructed by Japanese experts today, the doctors at the Central Lung Hospital have performed a radical intervention to remove the cancerous part of the lower lobe of the left lung. The surgery took place on the morning of September 8 and was very successful, completely removing the cancer but preserving the maximum amount of healthy lung. The treatment results for the patient are very positive. We are very happy that the most modern and difficult technique in the world has been implemented today in Vietnam” – Dr. Dinh Van Luong shared.

This is the first endoscopic surgical technique for shaping the airways and bronchi in complex lung diseases that was instructed by experts from Japan for the Central Lung Hospital on the occasion of the visit and exchange of 3 Japanese experts from Fukuoka University Hospital, Japan, in the field of thoracic surgery and lung diseases.

Immediately after the surgery, experts shared about the new technique at the Workshop "Update on advances in thoracic surgery" to improve professional knowledge in thoracic surgery.

The workshop is an opportunity for domestic doctors to perfect the technique of tracheobronchial surgery in malignant lung diseases - one of the most difficult techniques and requires high surgical and anesthetic techniques, as well as a team of highly qualified experts. Mastering this complex technique will bring a chance of survival and may be the last option for patients with advanced lung cancer.

The workshop was attended by Professor Takeshi Shiraishi, Fukuoka University Hospital, Professor Toshihiko Sato, Fukuoka University Hospital, Japan, who shared about Carina surgery/bronchoplasty in the treatment of malignant diseases and minimally invasive surgery and robotic surgery in Japan; lung transplant program at Fukuoka Hospital.

The workshop also attracted the attention of doctors specializing in thoracic surgery, oncology, pathology... from the Central Lung Hospital and general hospitals under the Department of Health and provinces/cities; Lung Hospital, Tuberculosis & Lung Disease Hospital of provinces...

According to Dr. Dinh Van Luong, as the country's final specialized hospital for tuberculosis and lung diseases, the Central Lung Hospital has now mastered many advanced techniques such as stem cell transplantation, lung transplantation, treatment of pulmonary fungal diseases, pulmonary fibrosis... with quality on par with developed countries.

The hospital is also launching a regenerative medicine treatment program to help patients with seemingly hopeless late-stage lung disease improve their quality of life and prolong their lives.

Endoscopic bronchial surgery for complex lung diseases has been successfully implemented in many European countries, the US and Japan. In Southeast Asia, Singapore has also mastered this technique, bringing effective treatment to patients.

Many lung cancer patients have to pay about 5-7 billion VND to go abroad for surgery. But when this technique is mastered by Vietnamese doctors, the cost is only about 1-2% of that figure, which means it only costs a few tens of millions of VND like a normal endoscopic surgery. This helps patients in our country enjoy high-quality healthcare at low cost. Many poor patients in remote areas have the opportunity to access this modern advanced technique right in Vietnam. "When we master these advanced and complex techniques, we will retain patients and limit the "bleeding" of foreign currency when patients go abroad for treatment" - Dr. Dinh Van Luong emphasized.

Sharing more about the effectiveness of applying advanced, modern techniques in the world to surgery for the above case, Dr. Luong said that normally with surgery for patients with lung cancer, the rate of no recurrence after surgery is about 5-6%, but with the technique of creating airways, bronchi and blood vessels through thoracic endoscopic surgery, radical surgery, minimally invasive, after 5 years, the patient has no possibility of recurrence up to 8-9%.

Thus, with the guidance of endoscopic surgery techniques for shaping the airways and bronchi in complex lung diseases, the Central Lung Hospital will perfect and master this difficult technique. When the technique is successful, the hospital will expand the implementation to all patients with health insurance because the need for medical examination and treatment of patients related to lung diseases is very large./.

The workshop "Update on advances in thoracic surgery" organized by the Central Lung Hospital is a very meaningful activity in response to the milestone of 50 years of establishing diplomatic relations between Vietnam and Japan. Previously, on the morning of September 6, the Central Lung Hospital was also pleased to welcome the Japanese Parliamentary Delegation to visit and work, including Mr. Ichiro Aisawa, Member of the Japanese National Assembly - Head of the Delegation, Chairman of the Council of Political Ethics, House of Representatives, Co-Chairman of the Task Force of the Friends of the Global Fund, Japan in the National Assembly (FGFJ) and Parliamentarians representing the following parties: Liberal Democratic Party, Komeito Party, Constitutional Democratic Party of Japan, Restoration Party of Japan, Democratic Party for the People; Representative of the Embassy of Japan in Vietnam
