Visiting the unit on the weekend, we felt the atmosphere of planting and caring for flowers of the soldiers very busy. From selecting seeds, sowing seeds, potting, to fertilizing, watering, catching insects... all were carried out skillfully and meticulously by the "Nursery Soldiers' Group", according to the plan of the superiors.
Lieutenant Colonel Dinh Hong Hoang, Deputy Chief of Political Affairs of Regiment 31, said that the unit not only prepared flowers for display on the occasion of Lunar New Year, but also served as decorations for the 80th Anniversary of the Regiment's Traditional Day (January 22, 1946 / January 22, 2026). The Regiment Commander assigned the grassroots shock troops to carry out this task. For Tet flowers, the unit planted sunflowers, cockscombs, and marigolds in November, while pansy flowers are expected to be planted in the third week of December.

He added that based on the soil quality and structure of the barracks, each unit can plant other short-term flowers, but must ensure economy and harmony, and avoid scattered planting that affects the overall landscape planning.
To learn more, we went to the flower nurseries of Battalion 7 (Regiment 31). Captain Bui Thanh Hiep, Deputy Political Commissar of Battalion 7, said that this time, the unit planted more than 10,000 trees and flowers of various kinds to decorate the spring flower garden at the unit as well as to decorate for the anniversary celebration. In addition to familiar short-term flowers, the unit also planted corn, rice... to make the space for soldiers to welcome spring more lively, reminiscent of the image of the old countryside.

Each flower, from its seedling to its maturity, contains the efforts, feelings and beliefs of the unit’s officers and soldiers. Everyone hopes that during holidays and Tet, the unit will always be bright with flags and flowers, both beautifying the landscape and practically improving the spiritual life of the soldiers. Therefore, all stages are carried out seriously and carefully.
Captain Bui Thanh Hiep shared that the unit has taken advantage of and inherited soil, plastic pots, and nets from the previous year. As for organic fertilizer, it is always composted year-round, made from waste from the garden, dry leaves, rotten plants, etc. As for seeds, a part is collected from the wilted flowers at the end of last year's crop, and a part is purchased from the production increase fund and the "collecting scrap" savings model.
Limited irrigation water sources make it difficult to take care of the unit's flower garden. To overcome this, officers and soldiers have taken advantage of daily water sources, especially filtered bathing water. Thanks to this creative approach, the unit has saved a significant amount of water while ensuring that the plants still grow well.
When asked about the duties of each member of the "Nursery Soldiers' Group", Sergeant Le Thanh Tin, Squad Leader of the Machine Gun Squad, Company 2, Battalion 7 (Regiment 31) shared: "The newly sprouted flowers are taken care of very carefully and meticulously in the nursery, covered with nets. Here, the company has arranged 2 "special" comrades - who were skilled in growing flowers before joining the army. As for the plants that have grown strong, about a hand's height, there will be a group of soldiers in charge of transferring the plants to pots, placed under the canopy of old trees or covered every day to avoid harsh sunlight. In the evening, the members take turns catching snails, green worms and other insects that are harmful to the plants.
For many "soldiers" who are accustomed to the sun and wind of the training ground, taking care of the small green buds until they bloom is not an easy journey. However, with dedication, enthusiasm and skillful hands, we believe that the officers and soldiers of the unit will have a flower garden in full bloom just in time for the 80th Anniversary of the 31st Regiment's Traditional Day and the Lunar New Year of Binh Ngo 2026.
