A lottery ticket that was almost forgotten won Melena Hill, a Virginia resident, a prize that could change her life. According to a press release from the Virginia Lottery, Melena Hill bought a Mega Millions ticket on January 9 at a Murphy USA gas station in Suffolk.
The winning numbers were 12-15-32-33-53, with the sixth Mega Ball number being 24. Hill picked the numbers randomly selected by a computer.
The way to play Mega Millions is that players can choose 5 numbers and 1 Mega Ball number. Players will win the jackpot if they match all 6 winning numbers on one ticket. The lottery company explained that Melena Hill only matched 5 regular numbers and did not match the Mega Ball number, but she spent an extra $1 on her ticket and this worked out great.
According to the press release, if Melena had matched 5 numbers correctly, she would have won a prize worth $1 million. However, because she spent an additional $1 on the Megaplier option (an option to increase the prize value if she wins), the amount was multiplied by 3, so the prize she received was $3 million.
Melena Hill told lottery officials she was shocked after discovering that the lottery ticket she had left in her closet for more than two months had won a multimillion-dollar prize. “My stomach was churning. I wanted to scream,” she said. The woman is unsure how she will spend her winnings.
The Virginia Lottery says the odds of matching the first five numbers in a Mega Millions drawing are 1 in 12,607,306. The odds of matching the Mega Ball are 1 in 302,575,350.
Earlier this year, Mr. Deivson Alves Martins, a carpenter in Massachusetts, USA, also surprised everyone when he won the jackpot of 1 million USD thanks to his persistence in buying scratch tickets at the store that sold him the small winning ticket.
Deivson often bought lottery tickets at a store, not having much hope, so he was surprised when he won $500. He then continued to buy scratch tickets to try his luck here a few more times, although he was unsuccessful, he persisted. Unexpectedly, on one return visit, he scratched a winning lottery ticket worth $1 million.
In February, a Chinese man won the country’s largest jackpot ever, worth 2.32 trillion VND. He bought 133 lottery tickets for 2 yuan each, betting on the same group of 7 numbers each time, and each ticket won him 5.16 million yuan.
