In the context of the rise of Indonesian football, good investment from the Philippines, Malaysia, and the host Thailand, it is not easy to give up the title. The pressure on our two men's and women's teams is not small.
According to the list of U22 players preparing for the 2025 Southeast Asian U23 Championship, the 2026 Asian U23 Qualifiers and the 33rd SEA Games announced by VFF on the morning of May 22, this time it gathers 26 young players.
Most of them are faces who have accompanied the team in previous gatherings and have been “tested” through many international matches and tournaments. Notably, this gathering marks the first appearance of Vietnamese-American striker Bui Alex, who is playing for the B team Bohemians Praha 1905 in the Czech Republic’s Third Division.
Bui Alex was born in 2005 in Prague (Czech Republic), is 1m78 tall, and plays as an attacking midfielder, winger and striker. This player has been a key striker for many years in Czech youth teams and scored 2 goals in the Third Division in 2025.
VFF said that adding new players like Bui Alex is a search for quality overseas Vietnamese players for Vietnamese football. This is a very early gathering for the Vietnam U22 team, because VFF understands that if they are not well prepared, it will be difficult to compete with young teams in the region at the 33rd SEA Games. In 2024, the U22 team was trained synchronously with the national team during the FIFA Days, participating in two international friendly tournaments U22 CFA Team China 2024 and 2025 with many quality opponents. In addition, potential young players were also given the opportunity to compete, in which a number of excellent players had the opportunity to try their hand at the national team level and made their mark at the 2024 AFF Cup. Their maturity gives Mr. Kim Sang Sik some peace of mind in the competition for the SEA Games gold medal.
With the national women's team, coach Mai Duc Chung and his team recently had a quality international friendly match with the Werder Bremen women's club (Germany). Although they lost to a strong team from Europe, the Vietnamese women's team has gained a lot of good experience for upcoming tournaments in Asia. In early June, the team will go to Japan, before participating in the 2026 Asian Women's Qualifiers, while continuing to prepare for the 2025 Southeast Asian Women's Championship and the 33rd SEA Games.
According to the Southeast Asian Football Federation (AFF), the Vietnam U22 team and the Vietnam women's team are in the top seed group at the 33rd SEA Games. The seed group for women's football includes the host team, Vietnam and Myanmar; for men's football, includes Thailand, Indonesia and Vietnam. The men's football group stage takes place from December 3 to December 12; the semi-finals on December 15; the third-place match and the final on December 18. The women's football group stage takes place from December 4 to December 13; the semi-finals on December 14; the third-place match and the final on December 17.
Thus, from now on, both the U22 men's and women's teams are ready to conquer the highest position at the SEA Games. In the context of positive changes in regional football, effective investment in training will be a good starting point for the tournament this winter.
