Dutch Post issues gold stamp to celebrate 750th anniversary of Amsterdam

October 27, 2025 marks the 750th anniversary of Amsterdam. Over the past year, the city has organized many activities to celebrate this historic milestone. On this special occasion, the Dutch Post (PostNL) issued a gold stamp with the theme “Amsterdam 750 years”.

The stamp measures 30x40 mm and is made from 24-karat gold. Previously, on January 2, PostNL also issued the “Amsterdam 750 Years” stamp set, consisting of five samples with five different designs, recreating the historical imprints of the city.

The name Amsterdam comes from the dam built on the Amstel River in the 13th century, on what is now Dam Square. After 1300, Amsterdam was granted city rights. Thanks to its role as a gateway to the sea and Baltic trade, the settlement quickly developed into the most important commercial center in the Netherlands in the 15th century. The fall of Antwerp in 1585 ushered in a new period of prosperity, as a wave of merchants from the South moved north, making Amsterdam a global trading center. In the 17th century, the population continued to grow rapidly, helping Amsterdam become one of the largest cities in Europe and opening the way for the formation of the world- famous canal belt.

From 1860, Amsterdam developed rapidly as an industrial city. 19th-century working-class neighborhoods such as De Pijp, Kinkerbuurt and the upscale Vondelpark formed around the center. Many urban development projects followed, such as the Zuid Plan (1917), Nieuw-West (after 1945), Buitenveldert (from 1958) and Bijlmer (from 1966). In the 1960s, Amsterdam became the focus of a new cultural movement, with young people protesting against plans to demolish the old town, build highways and build high-rise buildings. In the 1970s and 1980s, urban renewal continued, despite numerous riots by illegal settlers. The following decades saw suburban expansion with the Eastern Docklands, Ijburg, Nieuw Sloten and Zuidas.
