Raising eels on land is like raising ginseng in water. In Ba Ria-Vung Tau, the big ones are sold out.

The model of raising eels (a nutritious specialty fish like water ginseng) in cement tanks of Mr. Doan Xuan Khiem, in Song Cau village, Nghia Thanh commune, Chau Duc district ( Ba Ria - Vung Tau province) brings in billions of dong in income each year thanks to mastering the technology of breeding.


Through time visiting and learning about eel farming models in the Western provinces, as well as learning more from books, newspapers and the internet, Mr. Doan Xuan Khiem, a farmer in Nghia Thanh commune, Chau Duc district (Ba Ria - Vung Tau province) realized that the freshwater eel farming model brings high economic efficiency, while the food source is easy to find.

After successfully testing the specialty eel farming and mastering the breeding technology, in 2020, Mr. Khiem invested in a water filtration system, built tanks, and expanded the scale of commercial eel farming.

Mr. Khiem's area for raising eels for breeding and commercial purposes in cement tanks and tarpaulin-lined tanks is built on an area of about 7,000 square meters with 15 tanks.

For specialty fish to grow well, the water environment must be clean, this is the most important factor. Wastewater from eel farms is passed through a settling system, filtered and circulated by microorganisms to be reused to raise catfish and tilapia.

This is the optimal solution to help reduce water pollution and protect the environment in eel farming. Leftover food and residue must also be regularly cleaned to avoid causing diseases for eels.

Mr. Doan Xuan Khiem, a farmer who raises eels like "water ginseng" in Nghia Thanh commune, Chau Duc district (Ba Ria - Vung Tau province) said that with 100g of fry, after 8 - 10 months of raising, the eels will reach a weight of more than 1kg/fish and can be sold.

“Each time, you should change about 30% of the water in the tank. When changing the water, you must use a combination of water supply and drainage. You must do it gently and carefully to avoid shocking the fish. Do not change the water right after feeding the fish because it will affect the fish's digestion process.

Eel food must be fresh, mixed with vitamins and digestive enzymes to help increase the survival rate to 95%," Mr. Khiem added.

Every year, Mr. Khiem's family supplies traders in the provinces with more than 30 tons of commercial eel; more than 200,000 fry.

Eels weighing 1kg or more are sold for 400,000 VND/kg; eels weighing 10kg are sold for 120-140,000 VND/eel. After deducting expenses, the profit is about 50% of total revenue.

Mr. Pham Van Hinh, Chairman of the Gardening Association of Chau Duc district (Ba Ria-Vung Tau province) said that among the exported seafood products, eel is very popular and widely used in Japan, Korea, China, and European countries.

To create stable output, aiming at the export market, the Gardening Association has supported and mobilized 22 eel farming households in the district to establish Chau Duc Green Garden Cooperative, raising commercial eels and providing eel fry.

“We will advise and propose to the provincial departments, branches, and the People's Committee of Chau Duc district (Ba Ria-Vung Tau province) to allocate resources to replicate the model and build a brand, thereby helping to improve the quality of eel, create products of high economic value, and develop sustainable agriculture ,” said Mr. Pham Van Hinh.
