On July 30, Hoa Lac Airport ( Hanoi ) resounded with the sound of engines as 10 Mi-8 and Mi-171 helicopters rolled onto the runway. This was one of the training sessions in preparation for the 80th anniversary of the August Revolution and National Day on September 2.
Before the training session, the Mi-8 and Mi-171 helicopters were put into position. The flight crew coordinated with the technical team to conduct a comprehensive check, from the engine, electrical system, technical parameters to fuel filling, ensuring that each helicopter was in the best condition before takeoff.
At 10:30 a.m., Hoa Lac airport was shaken by the sound of 10 Mi-8 and Mi-171 engines, flying in a 1-3-3-3 formation. The helicopters took off simultaneously, practicing flying in formation with flags, ready for the demonstration flight mission during the 80th anniversary of the August Revolution and National Day on September 2.
Lieutenant Colonel Tran Minh Phu, Deputy Commander of Military Training, Regiment 916, said that although the pilots all have high qualifications, solid techniques and many accumulated flight hours, with the new formation and new terrain, the flight crews must carefully study the flight plan and practice continuously.
“We train regularly so that pilots can master the maneuvers, maintain the correct formation, and keep the correct time and distance when flying over the stands,” he said.
Carrying out this mission were flight crews from Divisions 370, 371 and 372. Colonel Nguyen Truong Toan, Political Commissar of Regiment 917 (Division 370) said that the unit was ordered to be mobilized from Can Tho to Hanoi, so preparations had to be more thorough.
“We select our pilots very carefully, all of them are level 1, the highest level. It is a great honor to be able to participate in this important mission,” he said.
The hot weather is no small challenge. According to Lieutenant Colonel Ha Xuan Ngoc, Chief of Navigation of Regiment 916, there were times when the temperature in the aircraft cabin exceeded 50°C.
“Even before takeoff, the soldiers were sweating profusely, but they kept their spirits up and focused on the training session,” he shared.
After completing the formation flight, the helicopters were instructed to land and return to the parking lot for inspection and maintenance, ready for the next training sessions and rehearsal before National Day.
