Rare oarfish nearly 2m long washed up on Ninh Thuan beach - Lang Son Newspaper and Radio and Television

People in Vinh Hy beach area (Ninh Hai, Ninh Thuan) discovered a rare oarfish nearly 2m long, with a severed tail, drifting close to shore.

On May 19, Mr. Nguyen Thanh Chau - Head of Vinh Hy village (Vinh Hai commune, Ninh Hai district, Ninh Thuan province) confirmed that local people discovered a rare oarfish washed ashore. This is the first time Vinh Hy people have witnessed an oarfish washed ashore in this area.

According to Mr. Chau, the nearly 2m long fish was discovered on the morning of May 18. When discovered, the fish was still alive, struggling very hard and had a broken tail. People quickly rescued the fish and released it back into the sea. However, not long after, the fish continued to drift to shore and died.

Local people buried the fish according to custom, showing respect for the fish associated with many sea legends.

The giant oarfish (Regalecus glesne) lives in the mid-ocean (200–1,000 m deep) of the Mediterranean, Atlantic, and Pacific Oceans. It feeds on mollusks, plankton, crustaceans, and squid.
