AI chatbots give Singapore's youth a mental health 'lifeline'

(CLO) As the cost of therapy continues to rise and stigmas about mental health persist, many young people in Singapore are turning to AI chatbots as a temporary solution to relieve their emotions.

Although AI chatbots cannot replace psychologists, for many people, it is a quick, convenient option that helps them cope with life's uncertainties.

“It became a place where I could vent my emotions without worrying about whether someone had the patience to listen,” said a young person named Jessica in Singapore.

“Sometimes I just need to whine, say what's on my mind, and then end it without feeling pressured to continue the conversation – because at the end of the day, it's not human,” she said.

Many experts warn that while AI chatbots can help relieve stress temporarily, they cannot replace human support, especially in cases of serious mental disorders.

Some recent studies show that AI chatbot users often feel more listened to, but also risk isolating themselves and distancing themselves from real social relationships.

Some countries like the US and UK are experimenting with integrating AI into mental health support systems, but strict regulations are still needed to ensure safety and effectiveness.
