From November 6-8, 2023, a series of OpenAI products, including the ChatGPT chatbot, application programming interfaces (APIs), and the Dal-E image creation service, experienced continuous technical issues, causing widespread disruptions.
On November 8th, ChatGPT users experienced issues receiving error messages such as "Something seems to have gone wrong" and "There was an error generating a response" when attempting to interact. Additionally, the ChatGPT interface displayed a warning about "unusually high demand," advising users to wait while OpenAI scaled its system.
On November 7th, a technical issue also affected the API and ChatGPT, causing continuous downtime for several hours. On November 6th, users of OpenAI's Dal-E image generation service also experienced an increase in error rates.
To address the technical issue, OpenAI published an incident report on its official status page, stating that its engineering team is investigating the cause of the problem.
A company representative stated, "We have identified the issue causing the high error rate in the API and ChatGPT, and we are working to resolve it."
By the early morning of November 9th, OpenAI reported that the affected services had been restored. "We detected the error affecting all services, identified the issue, and worked on a fix. Our services are now functioning normally," the company stated.
Previously, in February 2023 and May 2023, the ChatGPT chatbot also experienced issues that resulted in service unavailability, forcing it to cease operations globally.
