How to diagnose and use air conditioning effectively in hot weather

Professor, Doctor Nguyen Duc Loi, Association of Heat and Refrigeration Science and Technology (Hanoi) offers some solutions to use air conditioning effectively during the hot season.

In the summer, families often use air conditioners for long periods of time, even turning them on all day and night. Therefore, when the weather is too hot, mechanical air conditioners (non-inverter type) can be overloaded and stop working to protect themselves.

For inverter type, the air conditioner can still operate but the compressor speed is reduced, the cooling capacity is reduced, and the cooling temperature in the house is not guaranteed.

According to Professor, Doctor Nguyen Duc Loi, Association of Science and Technology of Heat and Refrigeration ( Hanoi ), the "symptoms" of air conditioners come from many causes: Dirty air filter; dirty condenser, obstructed cooling air; Not enough air in the condenser and evaporator, condenser cannot get cool air to cool down; windows and doors are open or not sealed; Too many people gather in one space; there is a heat source in the room; the machine has too much or too little gas due to overcharging or not enough...

"Families can check for themselves whether their air conditioner is low on gas or not by touching the copper pipe surface of the condenser. If it feels hot, it means there is enough gas. If you cannot access the condenser, you can touch the evaporator. If it feels hot, it means there is enough gas (using an infrared thermometer will increase the accuracy of the check.

Normally, if the machine is installed properly, the gas will not be lost until the end of the machine's life (about 15-20 years), and will not need to be refilled.

In case the machine lacks gas, the troubleshooting process is to find the leak at the flared joints. If it cannot be detected, the machine must be disassembled to find the leak, welded tightly, then reassembled, tested for vacuum, tested for tightness, vacuumed, filled with oil, refilled with gas...," said Professor, Dr. Nguyen Duc Loi.

For the air conditioner to operate effectively, proper installation is very important. "The room where the air conditioner is installed must be airtight; have a roof and sunshade curtains, especially in the East and West directions; the location where the condenser is installed must be airy, able to get fresh air for cooling...", said Professor, Dr. Nguyen Duc Loi.

Currently, all air conditioners have outdoor temperature limits, usually ranging from 38⁰C to 53⁰C. When buying an air conditioner, families should choose a type of machine with an outdoor temperature suitable for the installation location.

In addition, for the air conditioner to work best, families should let the machine run for 3 to 4 hours, then let the machine rest for about 1 hour and ventilate the room before turning it on again.

Users should also not set the indoor temperature too low (the reasonable indoor temperature is 27 to 28⁰C). If the room temperature and humidity are too low, it will lead to respiratory diseases, flu, cough, cold. Increasing the indoor temperature by 1⁰C means saving about 10% of electricity consumption.

In addition, users can add a fan placed at the window to bring air into the house; when the air humidity is low, a mist nozzle can be arranged to further reduce the temperature...

Families should also clean the machine regularly to help the air conditioner save energy: Clean the indoor air filter every 2 weeks; clean the condenser and evaporator once a year - if the area has a lot of dust, clean it 2 or more times...; discuss the problems the air conditioner is having with the maintenance technician in the most specific way to have early solutions and repairs .../.
