Potential dangers from ants

The article on the Medlatec General Hospital website has medical consultation with BSCKI. Vu Thanh Tuan said that the three-compartment ant has a long, slender body, divided into alternating black and yellow segments. This type of ant often lives in gardens, fields, landfills, construction sites, flies into houses, or can land on clothes and blankets.

The red-banded ant can secrete fluid and this fluid often contains a toxin called pederin. Its toxicity can be 12-15 times stronger than that of a cobra. Because the amount of fluid secreted by the red-banded ant is usually small, it is not as deadly as snake bites. However, if not treated promptly, the wound caused by a red-banded ant bite can also seriously affect health, even death.

When bitten by a red ant, the patient often feels a tingling sensation at that moment. After about 6 to 8 hours, red spots begin to appear. About 1 to 2 days later, the most characteristic lesions will appear. Then, about 3 days later, the condition begins to improve, and the ant bites start to flake off. About 5 to 7 days later, the flakes will fall off, but it can leave a dark spot for a long time.

Below are some specific signs when you are unfortunately bitten by a red ant:

- On the skin area bitten by ants there are streaks, slightly raised on the skin surface, with small blisters.

- Scratching the area bitten by ants will cause toxins and bacteria to spread to healthy skin, especially areas with folds.

- Note: The characteristics of the bite of the three-compartment ant can be easily confused with some skin diseases, especially shingles.

- People bitten by ants may feel a burning sensation at the site of the bite or may also suffer extensive damage. Some cases may have a mild fever or swollen lymph nodes nearby.

Use insecticides

According to an article in Lao Dong Newspaper, this is a fairly effective way to kill ants. The chemicals in the drug will paralyze the insect’s nervous system and cause it to die. The drug also has a smell that makes insects uncomfortable and stay away.

You should spray the medicine in places where ants often live, such as under the bed, under the cabinet, on shelves in the house... Don't forget to choose a medicine with a clear origin and when spraying, wear a mask, gloves and cover food carefully.

However, no matter how effective it is, you should not spray too much because the chemicals remaining in your living space for a long time will have a negative impact on your health.

Hang lemongrass or musk in the house

This is a simple and safe way to repel ants in the house that is used quite commonly. Lemongrass and thyme are herbs with a very characteristic strong aroma. In particular, this is also a scent that insects hate, including ants.

Use anti-ant nets and limit the use of blue light lamps.

Health & Life Newspaper quoted Professor Bui Cong Hien, Vietnam Entomology Association, as saying that to prevent this, apartments in high-rise buildings and urban areas can use 3-compartment anti-ants, mosquito and insect nets. During the insect development season (March, April, May and August, September, October every year), it is recommended to limit the use of neon lights and blue lights. You can turn on the balcony lights to attract insects there, reducing the density of flying into the house.

According to Professor Bui Cong Hien, if there are ants in the area, fluorescent lights should be replaced with yellow lights, because ants love fluorescent light. Avoid standing under bright lights in public places, be careful when working under the light because ants often appear in places with bright lights. Use nets on windows and doors, limit opening doors often. Clean the environment, clear bushes and grass around the house, because these are good hiding places for ants.

In places where ants are likely to fly in from outside, to limit and prevent them from invading the house, you can use light traps (white or purple light) at windows or doors in the evening, with a basin of water or a curtain underneath. Ants are attracted to the light and will gather at the place where the light trap is placed. The placement of the trap and the time depends on the family, but must ensure safety and not affect daily life. It is best to use insect-catching lamps sold on the market and place them in places where black ants are suspected to appear. When installing the lamp, replace it with a filament lamp with red or yellow light.
