Swedish media reported that the man was killed in a shooting in a nearby city.

In 2023, Salwan Momika, 38, orchestrated several Muslim bible burnings in Sweden, causing nationwide controversy and sparking outrage in several Muslim countries, leading to riots and domestic unrest in Sweden.

Police said they were alerted to a shooting on the night of January 29 in Södertälje, near Stockholm, and found a man suffering from gunshot wounds. He later died and a preliminary investigation into the murder has been launched.

Swedish media reported that prosecutor Rasmus Ohman confirmed on the morning of January 30 that five people had been arrested. Police said they were investigating reports that the murder may have been live-streamed on social media.

From Iraq, Momika came to Sweden in 2018 and was granted a three-year residence permit in 2021.

He and an accomplice have been charged with inciting racial hatred for statements they made regarding the Quran burning.

The man was due to appear at Stockholm District Court on January 30 to hear the verdict in the case, but the sentencing was postponed after a judge at the court confirmed that Momika was dead, the Stockholm District Court said.

Momika has previously argued that his protests are aimed at Islam, not Muslims, and that he wants to protect the Swedish people from the messages of the Quran.

Swedish police allowed the man's protests to go ahead, citing freedom of speech while charges were filed.

In a statement after the incident was confirmed, Sweden's security agency, SÄPO, said it was not involved in the investigation.

"We are responsible for developments in Sweden and around the world that are considered a threat to Sweden's security," said agency spokeswoman Karin Lutz, adding that the agency was not tasked with protecting Momika.

"The Koran burnings that have occurred, in which Momika was one of the Koran burners, have affected Sweden's security," she said, according to Dagens Nyheter newspaper.
