Culture - soft power creates identity
As a National Assembly delegate and a person with much experience in the cultural field, what is your assessment of the role of culture and entertainment in promoting the overall development of the country in the era of global integration?
I believe that culture and entertainment play an important role in promoting the overall development of the country, especially in the new era, the era of rising up. Culture is not only the spiritual foundation of society but also the soft power that creates the identity, position and attraction of the country in the international arena. In the context of globalization, cultural values become more essential, because it not only helps us preserve and promote traditions but also creates unique competitive advantages, bringing the image of Vietnam closer to the world.
The entertainment industry is an inseparable part of culture. Looking at what has happened with the films of Tran Thanh, Ly Hai, or the music concerts “Anh trai say hi”, “Anh trai vuon ngan cong gai”, it can be seen that this is a creative industry that can create great economic value, while promoting cultural exchange and enhancing mutual understanding between nations. Entertainment products such as movies, music, games or international cultural and artistic events not only bring in significant revenue but are also a way to promote the unique values of Vietnam to the world.
In the era of integration, investing in culture and entertainment is not only about preserving traditional values but also developing products that are creative, modern and in line with global trends. Cultural and entertainment industries need to be oriented as a strategic resource, contributing to promoting sustainable economic development, improving people's quality of life and enhancing patriotism, solidarity and national pride.
Making good use of the potential of culture and entertainment not only creates a solid foundation for the country's development, but also affirms Vietnam's role and position as a country rich in identity, creativity and deep integration in the international community.
In the context of strong technological development, online entertainment forms are increasingly popular, do you think this will affect the traditional culture of the nation?
The rapid development of technology and the popularity of online entertainment will certainly have a significant impact on the traditional culture of the nation. Digital platforms and online content are changing the way we access, consume and disseminate cultural values. In some cases, this can cause traditional values to be lost, especially when they are not accessible in an attractive way or do not suit the tastes of young people.
However, technology also brings many opportunities to preserve and promote traditional cultural values. Digital platforms can become effective channels of transmission, helping traditional culture reach a wide audience at home and abroad. For example, digitizing cultural heritage, developing traditional art products in the form of online content, or creating forms of entertainment based on folk culture elements can both preserve core values and innovate approaches.

So how do we preserve core cultural values?
To preserve core cultural values in this context, we need to implement many solutions at the same time.
Firstly, it is necessary to promote cultural awareness education, especially for the young generation, to help them understand and appreciate traditional values.
Second, it is necessary to encourage creativity in integrating traditional culture into modern entertainment products, helping these values continue to live in digital life.
Third, authorities need to have policies to support and protect intellectual property rights for traditional cultural products, avoiding infringement or distortion.
If we know how to properly utilize the power of technology, we can not only preserve but also spread the core cultural values of the nation. That will be the way for traditional culture to not only survive but also adapt, develop and become a strong driving force for the sustainable development of the country in the new era.
Bringing Vietnamese culture to the world with technology
The current trend of cultural and entertainment products is a strong fusion between international cultures and national identities. In your opinion, what are the challenges and opportunities for the Vietnamese cultural and entertainment industry in this period?
The strong interaction between international cultures and national identities in current cultural and entertainment products both brings great opportunities and poses many challenges for the Vietnamese cultural and entertainment industry.
The first challenge is the risk of losing or overshadowing the national cultural identity. In the context of increasingly popular and attractive international cultural products, we are facing a situation where traditional culture is gradually losing ground, especially when traditional values are not renewed or there is a lack of creativity in the way we approach the public. Another challenge is the huge competitive pressure from foreign cultural products that already have superior brands, quality and financial resources.
However, this very exchange also opens up important opportunities. First, it is an opportunity for us to learn and absorb the quintessence of other cultures, thereby enriching Vietnamese culture. The combination of modern international elements with national identity can create unique, attractive products that are suitable for the globalization trend.
Another opportunity is the ability to bring Vietnamese culture to the world. If exploited and promoted, traditional national cultural values such as music, cuisine, folk art or films can become "cultural ambassadors" in the international community. At the same time, the global audience's need to seek differences is also an advantage for us to confidently introduce our identity.
Could you share your views on the policies and measures that the State needs to implement to promote the sustainable development of culture, while protecting national identity in the context of globalization?
In the current context of globalization, promoting the sustainable development of culture while protecting national identity is an urgent and strategic task. To achieve this, the State needs to synchronously implement many policies and measures to both exploit cultural potential and maintain core national values.
First of all, it is necessary to better implement the Strategy for the Development of Cultural Industries issued by the Government. This is a potential field, not only contributing to economic growth but also helping to spread Vietnamese cultural values to the world.
The State needs to provide stronger support for cultural industries such as cinema, music, performing arts and tourism through investment in infrastructure, training high-quality human resources and encouraging creativity, while creating favorable mechanisms for businesses and artists to participate in this field, combined with the application of modern technology to increase cultural value in the digital economy.
Another important policy is to strengthen education and communication on traditional culture. In the context of globalization, the preservation of national identity depends largely on the awareness and pride of generations, especially the young generation. The State needs to incorporate national culture into the educational program from an early age, organize experiential activities, and encourage young people to participate in preserving and promoting the value of cultural heritage.
In addition, there are specific measures to protect tangible and intangible cultural heritage. These heritages are not only valuable assets of the nation but also important resources for developing cultural tourism. The State needs to invest in preserving and restoring heritage, and at the same time develop programs and projects to turn heritage into a source of creative inspiration in contemporary life.
An equally important point is to build a legal system and strict management mechanism to prevent acts of violating cultural values. The good news is that in 2024, the National Assembly passed the Law on Cultural Heritage (amended). However, in a globalized environment, culture is easily lost or distorted by external influences. The State needs to have more specific regulations to protect national cultural values, while selectively promoting international exchange and cooperation.
In addition, the State needs to continue to encourage the participation of communities and social organizations in building and protecting culture. Culture is not the private property of any individual or organization but the common heritage of the entire people. The consensus of the entire society will create strength to protect national identity and promote sustainable development.
With the right policies and strong commitment from the State, combined with the community's cooperation, Vietnamese culture will continue to develop brilliantly, affirming its unique identity in the flow of globalization, while contributing to building a rich, prosperous and humane country.
Thank you!
