We need to honor the person who contributed to laying the foundation of Dang Trong.

Many researchers believe that despite his great contributions to the construction of Dang Trong, Mac Canh Huong and many other Mac family members have not been properly honored.

In her speech sent to the scientific conference Mac Canh Huong (1542-1677) and the Mac family in Thuan Quang region (1558-1945) organized by the Da Nang City Historical Science Association yesterday, November 23, MSc. Nguyen Thi Hue, Institute of Cultural Research - Vietnam Academy of Social Sciences, said that in the Vietnamese chronicles, Mac Canh Huong stands out with a glorious origin. Nguyen Dynasty history books recorded him as one of the founding heroes of the Nguyen Dynasty in Thuan Hoa land. According to legend, thanks to his dedication to meditation, Mac Canh Huong lived for over a century.

According to Master Nguyen Thi Hue, Mac Canh Huong's real name was Lich, his biological father was Thai Tong Mac Dang Doanh. He was the youngest son of Thai Tong and his concubine Dau Thi Giang, in order after Hien Tong Mac Phuc Hai, Ninh Vuong Mac Phuc Tu, Khiem Vuong Mac Kinh Dien and Ung Vuong Mac Don Nhuong. Based on the genealogy of a Mac branch (later changed to Nguyen Truong under the Tay Son dynasty) in Tra Kieu village (Duy Son commune, Duy Xuyen district, old Quang Nam province), Mac Canh Huong led his family to migrate to Thuan Hoa in 1568, following and assisting Nguyen Hoang.

"From an unpopular prince, he became a talented strategist for the Southern expansion, laying a solid foundation for the development of Dang Trong. These contributions contributed significantly to the stability and prosperity of a dynasty that lasted nearly four centuries, demonstrating the greatness of a man who rose above his circumstances," analyzed Master Nguyen Thi Hue.

Dr. Luu Anh Ro, Permanent Vice President and General Secretary of the Da Nang City Historical Science Association, said that re-establishing the genealogy and biography of the famous mandarin Mac Canh Huong is a scientific requirement and also a responsibility for the process of expanding the nation's territory. Citing accessible Chinese genealogy, Mr. Ro affirmed that Mac Canh Huong was the son of Mac Phuc Hai, not the son of Mac Dang Doanh. According to him, the genealogy clearly records Mac Phuc Hai's three sons, including Mac Hoang Ninh, Mac Kinh Dien, and the Grand Tutor Mac Canh Huong.

Notably, from historical documents, Dr. Luu Anh Ro believes that the fixed identification of "Nguyen U Di" for the "Thai Pho" statue (bronze, weighing 300 kg) in Tra Lien (Quang Tri) is not convincing. According to him, a possible hypothesis that needs to be studied more deeply is that the statue is most likely related to a character of the Mac lineage, specifically Mac Canh Huong, who, along with his niece Mac Thi Giai, was present in Co Trai, Tra Lien, Ai Tu for a long time and had a great influence on Lords Nguyen Hoang and Nguyen Phuc Nguyen, especially on Buddhism and worship in this region.

"We propose that the existing data is sufficient to consider the hypothesis that "the Tra Lien statue is related to Mac Canh Huong and the tradition of casting statues for the king and princes of the Mac dynasty" as a credible research direction, worthy of further research by researchers and the Quang Tri relic management agency using interdisciplinary methods (history, archaeology, fine arts...). We wish to open a serious, scientific investigation of the "Thai Pho" statue instead of framing the story with only oral tradition or vague feelings," said Mr. Ro.

PROPOSAL TO NAM STREETS, "PROMOTE" THE TITLE OF RELICS

According to Dr. Luu Anh Ro, based on genealogical data, chronology and conduct that will be clarified in new studies in the coming time, it is an important basis to complete the scientific dossier to propose recognition of a national relic for the mausoleum of Mac Canh Huong at the foot of Non Truot mountain (Duy Xuyen district, old Quang Nam; ranked as a provincial historical relic since 2018). This will be an important step to honor the role of Mac Canh Huong in the process of developing the southern land. Dr. Ro also proposed naming streets after famous people of the Mac family, such as Mac Canh Huong, Mac Thi Giai... in Da Nang city, Hue city and Quang Tri province.

Associate Professor Dr. Do Bang proposed to organize a national conference in 2027 on the occasion of the 500th anniversary of the Mac Dynasty.

Dr. Phan Dang Long, Vice President of the Hanoi Historical Association, recommended the need to preserve and honor the heritage of the Mac family in a worthy manner. Accordingly, the work of preserving and restoring relics related to the Mac family in Da Nang should be strengthened, such as the tomb of Mac Thong Thu, the tomb of Hieu Van Hoang Hau Mac Thi Giai, the ancestral temple of the Nguyen Truong family, the tomb of Binh Huong hermit Mac Truong Thanh, etc. "To recognize the contributions of the Mac family in the process of opening up the Thuan Quang region, it is necessary to consider naming streets and public works in Da Nang, Hue and Quang Tri, places associated with the lives and careers of these characters," said Mr. Long.

According to Mr. Long, the values of tolerance, loyalty, morality and talent of figures like Mac Canh Huong, Mac Truong Thanh... need to be included in community educational and cultural activities.

Associate Professor Dr. Do Bang, Vice President of the Vietnam Historical Science Association, commented that the conference helped to better identify the role of the Mac family in history. Mr. Bang suggested: "In the next two years (2027), a conference should be held to celebrate the 500th anniversary of the Mac dynasty and the Mac family in Vietnam. Representatives of the Mac family can coordinate to propose and organize a large-scale conference to clarify and honor the historical role of this family."
