Recently, there has been a form of impersonating electricity employees to defraud and appropriate property.
Accordingly, the subjects impersonated electricity company employees and asked people to provide personal information and pay money or their electricity would be cut off or their contracts terminated within 2 hours of receiving the call.
Specifically, the scammer spoofed the phone number of an electricity company employee (using caller ID spoofing technology to create a phone number that closely resembles the electricity company's phone). This increases credibility and creates trust in the victim.
Then, the subjects send fake payment website links or fake applications of the electricity company's website or app for customers to access.
After carrying out the request, the subject will block communication, erase traces, and the victim's personal information will be revealed and exploited and manipulated to appropriate property.
Many subjects also send payment QR codes designed with the Electricity logo, making the victims not suspicious and scan the payment code for the amount already entered by the subject.
The Information Security Department recommends that when receiving a notification from your phone or a text message requesting payment of electricity bills or a notification of an unexplained power outage, you should contact the Vietnam Electricity customer care center for support.
People can look up information and use online electricity services and make online payments of the electricity industry by accessing the website and customer care application of the electricity company.
The Department of Information Security confirmed: Ho Chi Minh City Electricity Corporation - EVNHCMC and Hanoi Electricity Corporation - EVNHANOI have both confirmed that they do not collect money via Zalo and SMS messages, and warned people not to pay electricity bills via these channels.
