At the Infectious Diseases Department C, Dr. Le Thi Ngoc Thuan, Deputy Head of the Department, continuously walked to the patient beds to monitor the situation.

Stopping at the intensive care unit - where a nearly 30-year-old female patient with dengue fever and shock was lying, Dr. Thuan measured her blood pressure and read the test results, which showed that her blood concentration level had increased again. The patient was immediately transferred to the Adult Emergency - Intensive Care - Anti-Poisoning Department (ICU) for further treatment.

Doctor Thuan said that this patient came to the hospital on the 4th day of the onset of the disease, and the condition was not serious. However, upon admission, the disease progressed rapidly, platelets decreased, and blood concentration increased.

The doctor predicted that the patient would go into shock, so the entire team closely monitored his vital signs every 3 hours. On the 5th day, the patient went into shock, and the team immediately treated him with anti-shock and oxygen. The patient went out of shock but went into shock again after 12 hours. After treating the re-shock with a high molecular dose, the patient's blood pressure returned to normal and he continued to be treated with anti-shock according to the protocol.

By noon on the 6th day, the patient's blood pressure was stable, and the blood concentration level had returned to normal. Before he could breathe a sigh of relief, in the early afternoon, the patient showed signs of shock again, and the blood concentration level increased again. The patient was immediately transferred to the ICU for treatment.

During the discussion, the female patient said that she had had dengue fever once, so this time when she felt tired and had a continuous fever, she proactively went to the hospital for examination but still could not detect it early. The patient did not have health insurance, so she was very worried about being transferred to the ICU for treatment, as the hospital fees would be high and she would have to pay for them herself.

According to Dr. Thuan, dengue fever has now entered its season, the number of cases is increasing and the number of severe cases is also increasing. Because the rainy season is late this year, the peak of the epidemic is likely to be near the end of the year, people should not be subjective, and need to take measures to prevent the epidemic.

"At this time, hand, foot and mouth disease is also increasing. To prevent overlapping epidemics, people need to proactively clean around the house, pour out water and clean pots and basins, and sleep under mosquito nets. As soon as there are signs of dengue fever, go to the hospital for timely examination" - Dr. Thuan recommends.

In the first 6 months of 2023, Ho Chi Minh City Hospital for Tropical Diseases recorded 3,786 dengue fever patients coming for examination. In June alone, 422 cases were recorded, an increase of more than 100 cases compared to May.
