6 common travel scams
With increasingly sophisticated and developed technology, many new scams have appeared targeting tourists. The following is a summary of common tourist scams from relevant agencies.
Non-transparent booking website
When booking travel tickets online, you should be more vigilant with small websites that do not have transparent information. You should book tickets directly with airlines, hotels or use large, reputable booking platforms to ensure more safety.
Shady booking sites may try to steal your personal information. If the ticket price on the site is significantly lower than the market price, you need to be cautious.
Travel discount packages
Travel deals are a recent scam that has been popping up on social media. On platforms like Instagram or Facebook, you may see ads for travel deals to popular destinations like Bali or the Maldives. Be especially wary of these ads, as a “dream” vacation that is free or surprisingly cheap is unlikely to happen.
Public charging port
Having some public USB charging ports in places like hotels and airports is becoming more and more common, and they can be very useful for everyone, especially tourists. However, if you use these charging ports, you may be at risk of being infected with malware on your phone and stealing important information.
Public WiFi
Just like USB charging ports, you should also be wary of public WiFi networks. Hackers can use these WiFi networks to attack your phone. When you go to public places, it is best to only connect to WiFi networks with clear origins or use your own mobile data. There are now many companies that offer international data plans at extremely affordable prices.
Share your trip on social media
A new danger in today’s world is sharing your trip on social media. You may not think twice about posting information and photos of your trip on social media, or even updating your hotel or restaurant reservations. However, bad guys can use that information to stalk and steal.
ATM not working
Another scam that is becoming popular these days is the “ATM not working” scam. This scam starts with a message that your ATM account is down, followed by a local person who is eager to help you, perhaps even posing as a bank employee, informing you that the ATM is currently having problems, and suggesting that there is an ATM nearby.
The second ATM introduced may have a built-in card skimmer, a device that helps thieves steal your bank card number and PIN.
Building a 63 billion school on a hill, students cannot study for fear of...landslides
A school in the mountainous district of Tay Giang, Quang Nam, was invested with 63 billion VND, but students had only just started studying for a short time when a landslide occurred. For the past four years, students and teachers have had to go to another school 40km away.
The school was put into use in the 2019 school year, but students had not been studying for long when, after the floods at the end of 2020, the school experienced serious landslides on the hills behind the school.
Thousands of cubic meters of rock and soil fell from the positive slope, creating large cracks at the top of the hill, directly affecting teaching and learning.
Quang Nam Provincial People's Committee has decided to approve the adjustment of investment policy for Vo Chi Cong school project, the total cost of this third phase is nearly 29 billion VND.
The project will carry out slope leveling, excavation of landslides in 2020, construction of embankments to protect the positive slope, and reinforcement to protect the slope. Thus, compared to the initial investment, this project has now increased in capital to overcome landslides.
Musician Nguyen Van Hien donated a song about Uncle Ton to the Ton Duc Thang Museum.
Musician Nguyen Van Hien - former vice president of the Ho Chi Minh City Music Association - presented a song about Uncle Ton called The Eagle was composed by him.
Musician Nguyen Van Hien said he composed this song in 2018 during a visit to President Ton Duc Thang's Memorial Site in Ong Ho Islet (An Giang Province).
During the discussion, the director of the President Ton Duc Thang Memorial Site at that time said that there were many songs written about Uncle Ton, but there was a topic that no one wrote about, which was the plane that carried Uncle Ton that was displayed in the memorial site.
"Thinking no one would write it, I wrote the song Eagle Wings inspired by this meaningful keepsake.
I wrote and completed this song in just 3 days" - musician Nguyen Van Hien said .
Up to this point, the musician has recorded and made a music video to send to Ton Duc Thang Museum for full use without copyright.
Thua Thien - Hue encourages people to cremate
Thua Thien Hue province has also issued a policy of financial support to encourage people across the province to cremate their loved ones after they pass away instead of burying them as has long been tradition.
Accordingly, the province will support cremation costs of 6.5 million VND for deceased people over 10 years old with permanent residence in the province. Support of 4.5 million VND for cases of exhumation but the body has not decomposed and 3.5 million VND for deceased people under 10 years old.
The deceased whose identity cannot be determined or whose relatives do not arrange for burial will be supported with 100% of the cost according to the crematorium's invoice.
Researcher Nguyen Xuan Hoa - former director of the Department of Culture and Information of Thua Thien Hue province, said that the province was very bold in introducing this policy. However, according to Mr. Hoa, to change the concept of Hue people in organizing the burial of relatives, this policy is not enough.
"Hue residents are somewhat different from people in other large cities in the country in that they are more concerned about taking care of the graves of their ancestors and deceased relatives. Therefore, it is very difficult to persuade people to abandon the practice of burial and switch to cremation," said Mr. Hoa.
It is necessary to carry out a campaign and propaganda to help people better understand that cremation, burial of a loved one's ashes in a cemetery, depositing them in a pagoda or bringing them home... is a civilized trend in the world.
