With available potential, local authorities are promoting solutions to promote the production of medicinal herbs in the direction of commodities, linking production with product consumption.
Not a traditional crop in Bac Binh commune, in 2015, purple Morinda officinalis was brought by Mr. Bui Van Sy, Huu Phuc village to test-plant on local hills with an area of 1,000 m2.
After a period of time, with economic efficiency surpassing traditional crops, the first model of growing Morinda officinalis in the commune quickly received the attention of local people and began to be replicated.
In particular, in the past 2-3 years, the area of planting Morinda officinalis in Bac Binh commune has increased rapidly.
If in 2022, the whole commune only had 8 hectares of Morinda officinalis, now this number has increased to nearly 11 hectares, with 50 households growing, concentrated in the villages of Huu Phuc, Bac Son, and Yen Thich.
Mr. Vu Nguyen Ngoc, one of the large-scale purple ginseng growers in the commune, shared: "Previously, the entire hilly land area of the family was mainly used to grow eucalyptus, which was not very economically efficient.
Each hectare of eucalyptus yields only a few tens of millions of dong in a 5-6 year cycle. Therefore, in 2022, I decided to renovate 2 hectares of hilly land, install an automatic irrigation system and switch to growing purple Morinda officinalis.
Value reaches nearly 3 billion VND/ha
Along with the expanded area, the output of Ba Kich in Bac Binh commune is also increasing. It is known that the commune is currently supplying the market with 200 tons of Ba Kich tubers/year.
This number is expected to continue to increase in the following years as new planting areas in the past 2-3 years begin to yield harvests.
In addition to the main product of Morinda officinalis tubers, some households also develop nurseries, providing Morinda officinalis seedlings to households inside and outside the district, even expanding the market to Tuyen Quang and Phu Tho provinces with a total output of 3 million seedlings/year.
Mr. Ha Minh Tuan, Chairman of the Farmers' Association of Bac Binh Commune (Lap Thach District, Vinh Phuc Province) said: Compared to forestry trees, planting purple Morinda officinalis has higher initial investment costs, requires more land preparation and care. However, the economic efficiency is very good.
Specifically, the price of purple ba kích tubers is currently fluctuating around 90 - 100 thousand VND/kg. With this selling price, on average, each hectare of purple ba kích sold can earn 2.7 billion VND with a 4-year cycle, many times higher than traditional forestry trees such as eucalyptus, acacia...
Towards commodity production
As economic life improves, the demand for medicinal herbs and health foods increases.
With the advantages of natural conditions and available foundation, the development of medicinal plant production in the direction of goods is considered one of the important orientations in the economic development of Bac Binh today.
In addition to organizing annual technical training for farmers, the commune has recently coordinated with relevant units to register for VietGAP certification for 7 hectares of Morinda officinalis.
At the same time, the commune is also coordinating with the provincial Department of Cultivation and Plant Protection to deploy the issuance of growing area codes for 6 hectares of Morinda officinalis.
Mr. Diep Bao Toan, Vice Chairman of Bac Binh Commune People's Committee said: "In parallel with expanding production area, the issue of product output is always a problem that needs attention and resolution to ensure effective and sustainable development.
Registering for VietGAP certification and growing area codes is an important condition for localities to be able to connect with businesses in purchasing and guaranteeing output for people.
In addition, the Commune People's Committee is planning to establish a Cooperative Group for growing Morinda officinalis to connect households, share and help each other with techniques as well as product consumption. The cooperative group is expected to be launched this December.
In the commune, only Mr. Bui Van Sy's household has signed a contract with Vietnam Pharmaceutical Joint Stock Company to purchase all products.
“With the establishment of the cooperative, we expect that the local output of Morinda officinalis consumed through contracts with businesses will increase, promoting the sustainable development of the commune’s medicinal herb production, increasing income for people in the commune as well as contributing to the successful implementation of the goals of the program to build advanced and exemplary new rural areas,” Mr. Toan added.
