Manchester United fans predict that Maresca will move to Old Trafford. |
On the evening of January 1st, Chelsea confirmed Maresca's departure with a brief statement, bringing to an end the tumultuous period of the 45-year-old coach at Stamford Bridge. Notably, he was rumored to be one of the candidates to succeed Pep Guardiola at Etihad.
However, fans are leaning towards a different scenario. Many MU supporters believe Maresca could soon arrive at Old Trafford thanks to his close relationship with Jason Wilcox – MU's current Technical Director. Wilcox and Maresca previously worked together at Man City, with Wilcox serving as Academy Director and Maresca managing the youth team.
Wilcox left Man City for Southampton before being appointed to the Manchester United management team in 2024. On social media, most Red Devils fans believe that Maresca's unemployment will increase pressure on manager Ruben Amorim. The Portuguese coach is doubted in his ability to lead Manchester United back to their peak.
"The day Amorim leaves his post is not far off. Wilcox and Omar Berrada will certainly be targeting Maresca," one account wrote. Other opinions suggest that the MU leadership duo will be closely monitoring the situation, especially since Amorim has yet to make a significant impact since taking office at the end of 2024.
Despite showing signs of improvement this season, MU is still considered to be lagging behind its bigger rivals. In this context, Maresca's unexpected status as a free agent has further fueled speculation that Old Trafford could be his next destination.
