“Giving wings” to women-led startup ideas and projects

The industrial shrimp farming model of Ms. Mai Thi Nga's family not only produces high productivity but also contributes to the sustainable development of local aquaculture and seafood farming.

AMB Project - "key" to open the future

Recently, at the Center for Women and Development, the Organizing Committee awarded the Business Development Award to female owners of small and micro enterprises and business households of the AMB Project, Phase 2. The award ceremony is not only an opportunity to honor outstanding business owners and business households of the AMB Project, but also a milestone and emotional event in the journey of developing and spreading knowledge, promoting business startups owned by women in Vietnam.

The AMB project has been implemented in Vietnam since early 2024, with the participation of 3 partners, including Tinh Thuong Microfinance Organization (TYM), Thanh Hoa Microfinance and VietED Microfinance Program (VietED MFI) to provide free training, provide basic knowledge and management skills in the fields of business and finance, and provide 1-1 consulting support for female students who are owners of small, micro and household businesses.

It is known that the AMB Project was formed in the context of the COVID-19 pandemic, which has significantly impacted the production and business activities of the small, medium and micro enterprise community across ASEAN. Women-owned businesses have been most severely affected. Before being implemented in Vietnam, the project had made a strong impression in Malaysia and Indonesia by helping 6,500 female business owners receive consultation and training to improve their knowledge and skills in applying science and technology to their operations.

Model inspired by Thanh Hoa micro-loan capital

As a local partner, in the spirit of promoting the goals of the community, women's advancement and poverty reduction, Thanh Hoa Microfinance Institution has actively and made efforts to implement the AMB Project in rural and mountainous districts in the province. Since the project's implementation, through direct and online classes, Thanh Hoa Microfinance Institution has supported more than 7,400 female members to participate in courses on financial management, marketing, business development, etc., far exceeding the project's targets. Participating in activities within the project framework not only helps trainees have the opportunity to improve their management capacity but also provides a playground for them to learn and apply digital technology to business activities.

Mr. Nguyen Hai Duong, General Director of Thanh Hoa Microfinance Organization shared: “In the process of establishment and development, Thanh Hoa Microfinance Organization has made many efforts to contribute to promoting the movement of women starting businesses, rising up to take control of their lives, and developing the economy through practical and meaningful activities. In addition to providing friendly and effective financial services and products, Thanh Hoa Microfinance Organization regularly organizes programs and courses to improve knowledge, skills, and management experience in the fields of business and finance. The achievements of Thanh Hoa Microfinance Organization with the AMB Project open up opportunities for comprehensive development, business connection, and inspiration from successful models”.

At the award ceremony for Business Development for female owners of small, micro and household businesses of the AMB Project, phase 2, Thanh Hoa Microfinance Organization was honored to have 11 outstanding customers honored, including: 1 first prize, 2 second prizes, 3 third prizes, 5 consolation prizes with a total prize value of up to 125 million VND, accounting for 50% of the total prize value of the entire project. Ms. Mai Thi Nga (54 years old, Nga Tan commune, Nga Son district) is a customer of Thanh Hoa Microfinance Organization who was awarded the first prize.

Ms. Nga came to the project with the aim of finding opportunities and accumulating knowledge to develop an aquaculture model. Ms. Nga confided: “In the class, with the guidance and support of experts and staff of the Thanh Hoa Microfinance Organization, I had access to courses on financial management, business administration, developing business ideas; using digital tools for marketing and sales... The class has given me a lot of new knowledge and skills, keeping up with the times and the strict requirements of the current market.”

Previously, Ms. Nga's family had experience in shrimp farming but mainly in the extensive form, so they could not exploit and take full advantage of the potential and inherent advantages of the locality and family, and the economic efficiency was not high... In 2015, Ms. Nga boldly invested in machinery and equipment, switching from extensive shrimp farming to industrial shrimp farming. Currently, Ms. Nga's shrimp pond has a revenue of about 250 million VND/month. Along with the expansion in quantity and scale of aquaculture, her shrimp pond is creating jobs for 2 regular workers, 3 seasonal workers and supplying shrimp to hundreds of aquatic and seafood traders in the locality as well as neighboring districts. With what she has accumulated, Ms. Nga has shared her knowledge and experience in developing an industrial shrimp farming model with some neighboring households in the village and commune.

Carrying out the mission of promoting economic development and enhancing the status of women, the AMB Project has been and continues to bring new opportunities and success to the community of small, micro and women-owned businesses in Thanh Hoa. That journey always bears the strong commitment to contribute, connect and spread sustainable values of the Thanh Hoa Microfinance Organization.
