Psilocybin, a hallucinogen, could be the savior of the future of mental health care, according to a new study from Swinburne University of Technology, Australia, which is pioneering the use of psychedelics to treat depression.

According to a VNA reporter in Sydney, the study showed that after 12 weeks of treatment with a regimen of two sessions of Psilocybin at a dose of 25mg combined with supportive therapy, most participants achieved positive clinical results in depressive symptoms.

Professor Susan Rossell of Swinburne University of Technology, who led the study, said the trial results offer hope to millions of people struggling with depressive disorders, especially those with treatment-resistant depression.

Psilocybin-assisted psychotherapy is an effective treatment for patients who have failed to respond to traditional therapies, Professor Rossell said, adding it would make a difference to the lives of people with depression and put Australia at the forefront of psychedelic research worldwide .

The study also evaluated the feasibility, safety, and efficacy of Psilocybin in providing psychological support to patients with treatment-resistant depression, while helping to identify predictors of treatment outcome and recognize individual responses.

For example, the patient's mood before taking the drug, whether they experience hallucinations during the treatment session, or the patient's psychological changes during the trial... are all indicators of treatment and determine the success of the treatment process.

Although not everyone in the trial experienced significant improvement, there were also no serious side effects, consistent with previous studies.

Professor Rossell said these promising preliminary findings would spur further research into the use of hallucinogens for treating other mental illnesses./.
