'Sprint' at the construction site of the Hung Vuong extended road project

QTO - After many years of construction delays, the Hung Vuong road project connecting the East-West economic corridor and the Southeast Quang Tri Economic Zone (abbreviated as the extended Hung Vuong road) is entering the final stage. With less than half a month left until the deadline of September 30, 2025, the construction unit is urgently mobilizing maximum human resources and machinery to complete the items, determined not to delay the progress again.

Great expectations from the route

The feasibility study report was approved at the end of 2017. The Hung Vuong extended road project has a scale of nearly 4.2km, including the main Hung Vuong route of more than 2.1km and the Bao Dai branch route of more than 2km. The total investment capital of the project is more than 97.3 billion VND, not including site clearance costs. The project passes through 3 villages: Ai Tu, Tan Kien and Ha Xa in Ai Tu commune.

The project opens up the hope of developing a new economic -urban axis in the South of Quang Tri province. After completion, the main Hung Vuong route connects directly to the Southeast Economic Zone, the dynamic area of the province; the Bao Dai branch route goes through residential areas, creating convenience in trade and daily travel. Therefore, people on both sides of the route always hope that the project will soon be completed to end the prolonged chaos.

As a household in the project's affected area, Mr. Nguyen Hai, in Tan Kien village, Ai Tu commune, accepted the policy of moving his house to make way for the construction of Bao Dai road. After receiving compensation of more than 400 million VND, he rebuilt a new house on the remaining land and moved in for more than a year. However, until now, in front of his house, the road has only been leveled, muddy in the rain, and dusty in the sun, affecting his family's daily life.

"I accept to give up land to build a road with the hope of making travel more convenient and the economy more developed, but the project has been slow for a while, so I really hope the contractor will speed up the progress so that the road can be completed to help people stabilize their lives," Mr. Hai wishes.

Speed up progress on each section

Present at Km1+450 of Hung Vuong main road, with Manh Linh Construction Company Ltd. as the contractor, the reporter recorded the urgent atmosphere of construction of the asphalt pavement project.

Trinh Dinh Lam, the site manager of Manh Linh Construction Company Limited, said that taking advantage of the favorable weather, the unit mobilized 15 motorbikes of various types and 50 workers to work overtime through lunch and until 9 p.m. every day to ensure the progress of the project. Currently, the unit is focusing on paving 2 layers of asphalt on the main road surface with the goal of basically completing it by the end of September. The sidewalk and auxiliary works will be completed later.

According to the report of the Provincial Construction Investment Project Management Board, as of mid-September 2025, the value of the Hung Vuong extended road project reached more than 45 billion VND/73.6 billion VND, equivalent to 61.13% of the construction volume. Of which, the main Hung Vuong route, with Manh Linh Construction Co., Ltd. as the contractor, has achieved 64% progress. Of which, over 1km of asphalt concrete has been completed; the remaining 1km of crushed stone aggregate has been constructed; 7/7 cross-culverts and nearly 3.8km of longitudinal drainage ditches have been completed; the concrete surface of Khe Su bridge has basically been completed.

Regarding Bao Dai route, which is being constructed by Quang Tri General Construction Joint Stock Company, the progress is slower, reaching only nearly 44%. However, the main items including 854m of asphalt, 2/4 of the culverts, and many sections of earthwork have been completed. In particular, the "bottlenecks" of the site that have lasted for many years have been basically resolved after the local authorities resolutely dealt with cases of procrastination and non-relocation.

Director of the Provincial Construction Investment Project Management Board Nguyen Thanh Binh said that the basic problems have been resolved, so the unit requested the contractor to urgently concentrate maximum human resources and machinery, determined to hand over the project before September 30, 2025.

The Hung Vuong extended road project has repeatedly become the focus of questions at the Provincial People's Council meetings because of the nearly 5-year delay. Initially, the contract signed in December 2020 was expected to be completed in 22 months, but in reality, it had to be extended many times, and at times the investor even terminated the contract with the old contractor to restart. After the Chairman of the Provincial People's Committee, Tran Phong, directly inspected the site at the project in mid-July 2025, he resolutely directed the enforcement of cases of intentional non-handover of the site and required the contractors to speed up the construction progress. Up to now, although the disbursement value of the entire project has only reached 26.88% of the total allocated capital, the actual construction volume has had a positive change.
