On May 16, in Hanoi, the Central Lung Hospital coordinated with the Department of Science, Technology and Training ( Ministry of Health ), the Association of Cardiovascular and Thoracic Surgery, the University of Medicine and Pharmacy, Vietnam National University, Hanoi and the National Organ Transplant Coordination Center to organize a scientific conference with the theme: "High-tech medicine: Lung transplantation and regenerative medicine in the United States and Vietnam - Current situation and solutions".
The workshop was attended by two experts on lung transplantation and ECMO from the University of California, San Francisco (UCSF) in the United States who visited and gave lectures to exchange experiences, professional knowledge and contribute to the development of advanced techniques in lung transplantation and regenerative medicine, thereby improving the professional capacity of medical staff working at the Hospital in particular and medical staff in Vietnam in general.
At the Workshop, Professor Jasleen Kukreja, Surgeon, Lung Transplant Specialist, Director of the Lung Transplant Program, University of California, San Francisco, shared the topic: "Overview of the lung transplant situation at the University of California, San Francisco, USA"; and Professor Marek Brzezinski, Anesthesiologist, ECMO Technical Specialist, University of California, San Francisco, presented the topic: "Applications of ECMO in cardiopulmonary surgery, lung transplantation at the University of California, San Francisco". In addition, there were many professional exchange activities on the sidelines of the Workshop to share experiences in this field between Vietnamese hospitals and the world's leading experts.
Speaking at the workshop, Deputy Minister of Health Tran Van Thuan was pleased to see that over the years, the Central Lung Hospital has made significant progress in the field of lung diseases, developed specialized lung disease techniques, updated world science and technology, and fulfilled its mission of caring for and improving lung health for the people.
According to Deputy Minister of Health Tran Van Thuan, the workshop is a clear demonstration of the Hospital's efforts towards developing two high-tech groups in lung transplantation and regenerative medicine, which are also the high-tech spearheads of the health sector, especially in the period of comprehensive recovery and development after the COVID-19 pandemic.
"The workshop is an opportunity for us to share and update on high-tech medicine related to lung transplantation and regenerative medicine in the United States and Vietnam. The presentations provided an overview of the lung transplantation situation at the University of California, San Francisco as well as the situation of organ transplantation, lung transplantation, open heart surgery in Vietnam; the role of stem cells and immune cells in the treatment of end-stage lung disease. We were also updated on the application of ECMO in cardiopulmonary surgery, lung transplantation and the prospect of lung transplantation creating opportunities to improve the time and quality of life for patients with pulmonary fibrosis and late-stage interstitial lung disease. The content we discussed and shared today is very meaningful to those working professionally in this field, as evidenced by the large participation of directly related units in the hall today and several hundred online participants from units nationwide. The workshop therefore contributes to improving the capacity of medical staff, laying the foundation for activities "Develop, research, and apply advanced technology in the treatment of end-stage lung disease in Vietnam" - Deputy Minister of Health Tran Van Thuan emphasized.
Based on the results of this Workshop, Deputy Minister of Health Tran Van Thuan proposed that the Central Lung Hospital take the lead, coordinate with relevant Departments/Offices, Vietnam Social Security and partners to complete high-tech procedures on lung transplantation and regenerative medicine, linked to health insurance payment; Increase investment in facilities, equipment, and development of specialized human resources; Strengthen domestic and international cooperation.
Dr. Dinh Van Luong, Director of the Central Lung Hospital, said that in 2018, the Central Lung Hospital, with two strategic tasks of eliminating tuberculosis and taking care of people's lung health, had very extensive cooperation with UCSF University in the United States. With the valuable help and support of UCSF University - the leading prestigious Medical Center in the United States and the world, the leading experts here, specifically Professor Jaslee Kukreja, the Central Lung Hospital has experts who are trained, instructed very dedicatedly, have a very high sense of responsibility and completely free of tuition fees. True to the purpose of the training process, the Central Lung Hospital has coordinated with domestic units and experts to carry out the most comprehensive successful lung transplant - reaching the highest level as at UCSF University.
In 2020, the Central Lung Hospital coordinated with the 108 Military Central Hospital to successfully perform a lung transplant surgery for a patient with end-stage pulmonary fibrosis. The surgery was performed strictly and methodically according to international standards from the UCSF Lung Transplant Center - one of the 9 largest and most prestigious lung transplant centers in the United States. The entire preparation process from brain-dead donors and people waiting for lung transplants was evaluated, diagnosed, and treated strictly according to the standards of the UCSF University Heart-Lung Transplant Center. After nearly 3 years of lung transplant, the patient recovered well and was completely healthy, with stable respiratory function. This is the surgery that experts consider the most successful ever, in the context that Vietnam has performed many lung transplants from brain-dead donors but the success rate is not high, the life expectancy of the recipient after lung transplant is not long.
The Director of the Central Lung Hospital affirmed: As a leading specialized hospital in tuberculosis and lung diseases, the Central Lung Hospital has routinely performed most of the advanced techniques in both respiratory medicine and thoracic surgery. The hospital has successfully completed the lung transplant project, which is a step to conquer the peak, opening up opportunities for longer life, improving the quality of life for late-stage patients who no longer respond to other treatment methods. In addition, many clinical trials at home and abroad have demonstrated that stem cells and immune cells have great potential in treating late-stage lung diseases./.
