The most exciting new iPhone will still be made in China

Apple is reportedly planning to move iPhone production for the US market from China to India as soon as possible.

But that’s not easy, especially when it comes to manufacturing new, more complex iPhone models. While Apple could potentially manufacture most of its iPhones in India in the next few years, there are still many hurdles the company needs to overcome.

Now, Bloomberg's Mark Gurman has issued a warning about what Apple will face as it moves production, saying that Apple is preparing for a major overhaul of its flagship product for the 20th anniversary of the iPhone in 2027, potentially creating a new "iPhone X moment."

Challenges facing the 20th anniversary edition of the iPhone

Gurman described the upcoming device as “extremely complex” to manufacture. He noted that while iPhone manufacturing quality in India is already on par with China, the 20th anniversary models will require new components and manufacturing techniques, making it difficult to manufacture outside of China. “Maybe at some point in the future, but certainly not in 2027,” he said.

Apple has yet to reveal details on how it will deliver the next “iPhone X moment” with the 20th anniversary edition. One rumored possibility is the iPhone Fold, which features a foldable display. Although the technology has been around for more than half a decade, Apple has been at the forefront of reshaping its product portfolio with cutting-edge technology.

When Apple introduced the iPhone X with its all-screen design, nothing could match the craftsmanship, Face ID technology, and innovative design of this iPhone, so the question was how Apple could aim for the same goal.

In the meantime, Apple is also preparing a major change to the current iPhone design language. The iPhone 17 Air and 17 Pro models are expected to replace the traditional camera module with a camera bar, giving them a fresh new look. Additionally, the company may move away from the titanium and glass construction introduced two years ago and return to a more classic aluminum and glass design for future models.
