Close-up of Chu Dang Ya volcano, Gia Lai province
The name means "wild ginger" in the Jrai language. Chu Dang Ya volcano, located in Bien Ho commune, Gia Lai province, is known as one of the volcanic craters with a geological history of millions of years old.
According to geologists, Chu Dang Ya is a complex of three small volcanoes located close together, forming a large funnel-shaped basin, surrounded by gently sloping cliffs. Currently, Chu Dang Ya volcano is inactive, the most recent eruption is estimated to have been about 10,000 years ago.
This eruption process created a layer of extremely fertile red basalt soil, spreading across the mountainsides and valleys, becoming a solid foundation for life and development of this land.
Looking down from above, Chu Dang Ya looks like a majestic picture created by Ia Gri village, home to the Jrai ethnic group, and the alternating colors of seasonal crops on the volcano's slopes. The majestic volcano is not only a source of fertile land for cultivation, but is also considered a "roof", a "mother" that protects and nurtures the villagers.
Agriculture is the mainstay of the economic life of the Ia Gri people.
In recent years, Chu Dang Ya has become a famous tourist destination, especially during the wild sunflower season. The Chu Dang Ya Volcanic Wild Sunflower Festival is held every November, gradually becoming a major cultural and tourist event, attracting thousands of domestic and foreign tourists.
The festival is not only an opportunity to admire the brilliant yellow color of wild sunflowers but also an opportunity for visitors to immerse themselves in the unique cultural atmosphere of the Central Highlands.
The development of tourism has brought many positive changes to the lives of people at the foot of Chu Dang Ya volcano when seizing opportunities, providing tourism services such as selling wild sunflowers, driving motorbike taxis to pick up and drop off guests, doing culinary business, or even creating unique tourism products... contributing to significantly improving economic life. Especially children have more conditions to buy books, school supplies...
With the combination of unique geology, rich nature and unique indigenous culture, Chu Dang Ya is one of the must-see destinations of Gia Lai tourism.
Gia Lai now not only has blue sea and golden sand but also has the wild, rustic natural beauty and the unique cultural identity of the Central Highlands. The potential at the foot of the million-year-old "sleeping" volcano Chu Dang Ya is being "awakened" to develop sustainable tourism, so that the rustic, hospitable and vigorous Jrai people have the opportunity to rise from the legendary basalt land.
Regarding the potential at the foot of Chu Dang Ya volcano, Mr. Pham Anh Tuan, Chairman of Gia Lai Provincial People's Committee, recently had a working session with functional agencies on researching and proposing a planning plan for Bien Ho - Chu Dang Ya Tourist Area.
Mr. Pham Anh Tuan assessed that Bien Ho - Chu Dang Ya Tourist Area is a unique geological and landscape resource of Gia Lai province, with special natural and cultural value. Gia Lai provincial leaders assigned the Department of Construction to coordinate with relevant agencies to urgently implement the planning of the tourist area here, to be completed in October 2025.
In addition, Mr. Pham Anh Tuan requested that the planning of Bien Ho - Chu Dang Ya tourist area needs to be carried out systematically and in-depth, ensuring harmony between the factors of preserving cultural heritage, natural landscape and sustainable tourism development. There must be a synchronous and long-term development orientation, attracting a large number of people and tourists.
