On December 28, Syrian state news agency SANA quoted Mr. Khattab as saying: "Regarding security and intelligence, the security agencies will be reorganized after dissolving and restructuring all intelligence agencies."
Syrian armed opposition forces captured Damascus on December 8. Russian officials said Syrian President Bashar Assad resigned after negotiations with the parties to the Syrian conflict and left the country for Russia, where he was granted asylum.
Mohammed al-Bashir, who had been running the Idlib-based administration formed by Hayat Tahrir al-Sham (HTS) and other opposition groups, was appointed interim prime minister . He later announced that an interim government had been formed and would remain in place until March 2025.
Regarding the situation in Syria, in a phone call on December 28, Egyptian President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi and his French counterpart Emmanuel Macron called for promoting a comprehensive political process with the participation of all components of Syrian society.
According to a statement from the Egyptian Presidency, during the phone call, Mr. Sisi and Mr. Macron discussed a range of regional issues as well as bilateral relations. The two leaders highlighted the importance of protecting Syria's sovereignty , unity and territorial integrity.
The two sides also exchanged views on the situation in Gaza, stressing the need to reach a ceasefire agreement, facilitate the exchange of hostages and ensure the full and unhindered flow of humanitarian aid to the Mediterranean strip.
The two presidents stressed the need to avoid a full-scale war in the region.
Mr. Macron appreciated Egypt's efforts since the Gaza conflict began in October 2023, expressing his full support for Cairo in pursuing a solution that ensures security and stability in the region.
In addition, the two sides also emphasized the importance of implementing the terms of the ceasefire agreement in Lebanon as well as fully implementing Resolution 1701 of the United Nations Security Council; calling for continued support to enhance the capacity of the Lebanese army and speed up the process of electing a new president in this country.
