The 2025 ASEAN Police Football Tournament took place in its first round on July 7. Vietnam Police Team I lost to Cambodia 2-4 at Hang Day Stadium. Meanwhile, in Group B at PVF Stadium ( Hung Yen ), Vietnam Police Team II had a favorable start with a 3-0 victory over Singapore.
This is a tournament in which the host Vietnam will have 2 participating teams, CAND Vietnam I and CAND Vietnam II. The CAND Vietnam I team will participate in the tournament with the core of young players from Hanoi Police such as Ha Van Phuong, Hoang Van Toan, Giap Tuan Duong... They are all U23 Vietnam players, even Van Toan and Tuan Duong used to play for the national team under Mr. Troussier. The CAND Vietnam II team brings the strongest force to the tournament with many familiar faces such as Phi Minh Long, Nguyen Van Dung, Nguyen Huy Hung...
In the previous tournament announcement, Colonel Pham Kim Dinh - Director of the Department of Political Work, Ministry of Public Security - said: "This is an international sports exchange activity with profound political and foreign affairs significance of the Vietnam People's Public Security force.

The tournament is not only an opportunity for police officers from different countries to practice sports and develop team spirit; it is also a playground to strengthen friendship and cooperation between forces tasked with ensuring security and order in the region.
We hope that the tournament will be a bridge of friendship, strengthening international cooperation on security, while promoting the image of Vietnam, its people and country as peaceful, developed and hospitable to international friends; affirming that Vietnam is ready to be a friend, a reliable partner, and responsible to the international community."
Coach Tong Anh Tuan of the Vietnam Police Team I said: "We are ready in the spirit of exchanging, learning and showing the beautiful image of Vietnam to international friends."
A representative of the Vietnam Police Team II shared: “Our tournament participants are mainly police officers and soldiers. In addition, some professional players also join the team.”
Coach Apichart Puttaboon of the Thai team said: “I participated in this tournament in 2012 and now have the opportunity to return to Vietnam. Our goal is to win the championship.”
The Australian representative said: “100% of the team are police officers. We are participating in the tournament with completely amateur players. But as our compatriot coach Ange Postecoglu, former Tottenham captain, shared, we will compete with enthusiasm and dedication to the best of our ability.”
After the first round, on July 8, players, coaches, referees and representatives of the organizing committee participated in a tour of Ha Long Bay. Player Nguyen Nhan Duc of the Vietnam Police Team I shared: “I am very proud to be part of this tournament. This is not just a football match but also an opportunity to exchange and connect between soldiers and police forces in the region. In particular, the trip to Ha Long Bay helps international friends understand more about Vietnamese culture and people.”
Lao player Souny Sihalat, who studied and lived in Vietnam for 5 years, commented: “It has been 3 years since I graduated until now that I have had the opportunity to return to this land. But this return is more special because I came to Vietnam and participated in the 2025 ASEAN Police Football Tournament as a player for the Lao team. This is a meaningful tournament, it helps strengthen the friendship between countries in the region, especially the brotherly relationship and friendship between Vietnam and Laos.”
On July 9, after the opening ceremony at Hang Day Stadium, there will be a match between Vietnam Police Team I and Thailand. At the same time, Vietnam Police Team II will compete with Australia at PVF Stadium.
The 2025 ASEAN Police Football Tournament will take place until July 15 at Hang Day Stadium (Hanoi) and PVF Stadium (Hung Yen). The teams in each group will compete in a round robin, selecting the first and second teams in each group to compete in the semi-finals and finals to find the champion. The total prize value is more than 70,000 USD, of which the champion team will receive 30,000 USD in addition to the gold cup. The runner-up team will receive a silver medal and 15,000 USD, and the two third-place teams will receive 10,000 USD each.
U22 Vietnam is ready to defend the title at the U23 Southeast Asian tournament
On July 8, Vice President of the Vietnam Football Federation (VFF) Tran Anh Tu visited and encouraged the spirit of the Vietnam U22 team in the final preparation phase for the 2025 Southeast Asian U23 Championship.
Vice President Tran Anh Tu affirmed that VFF always puts the development of youth football first, especially creating the best conditions for U22 Vietnam to have comprehensive preparation for the upcoming important tournament. In addition to the goal of the Southeast Asian U23 tournament, the team also aims for other tournaments such as the 2026 Asian U23 qualifiers and the 33rd SEA Games. VFF leaders also highly appreciated the team's thorough preparation process in the past time, from organizing training sessions in parallel with the national team from the end of 2024, to participating in quality friendly tournaments in China.
Vice President Tran Anh Tu praised the team's serious work ethic, efforts and determination. He emphasized that U23 Vietnam is the current champion of the tournament after two consecutive victories in 2022 and 2023. However, maintaining the position is a big challenge when regional rivals are investing heavily in youth football.
