On the morning of August 17, Indonesia entered the 15-16 qualifying match against Puerto Rico. This was their last chance to bring joy to their home fans and escape the bottom position of the top 16 teams.
In the group stage, the Indonesian and Puerto Rican women's volleyball teams faced each other. At that time, the home team had a moment of taking the lead but still lost after 5 sets.
This time a similar scenario happened. With home court advantage and enthusiastic cheers from the stands, they won the first set 26-24. Then they lost the second set 19-25.
In set 3, Indonesia once again took the lead when they won 25-22 and were only 1 set away from the overall victory. And the home team was quite close to that when they led 15-12, 18-16 in set 4.
But the Indonesian players were too impatient, rushed and made many mistakes, losing 22-25. That forced the match to go into a decisive 5th set.
At this point, all of Indonesia's home advantage disappeared as they lost strength. Puerto Rico easily won 15-12 to end the match.
In the end, Puerto Rico ranked 15th, while Indonesia ranked 16th. In theory, this is not a bad ranking when Indonesia is still in the group of strong teams.
But in reality, Indonesia's form is not good at all. On the journey from the group stage to the qualifying matches, this team only really won once despite having the home advantage.
In the group stage, Indonesia lost 4 matches and only won against Canada, the weakest team in group A. But then, they were surprisingly awarded a 3-0 defeat against U21 Vietnam according to the decision from the International Volleyball Federation, while previously losing 0-3.
Therefore, Indonesia was counted as having 2 wins in the group stage, while in reality they only did it once. Also thanks to the change in results, the home team unexpectedly won a place in the round of 16 from the hands of the U21 Vietnamese women's volleyball team.
But Indonesia's performance was not much better. They lost all four matches with poor results, respectively against Italy (1-3), Thailand (0-3), South Korea (2-3) and Puerto Rico (2-3).
It can be seen that Indonesian women's volleyball is going through a difficult period. At both the national team and youth levels, their teams are sliding down with too many losses.
