Vietnam and Brunei officially established diplomatic relations on February 29, 1992. Over the past three decades, the friendship and multifaceted cooperation between the two countries have seen strong and substantial developments.

On that journey, 2019 marked an important development in Vietnam-Brunei relations when the two countries' leaders agreed to upgrade the relationship to a Comprehensive Partnership during the State visit of Sultan Haji Hassanal Bolkiah to Vietnam in March 2019.

The upgrading of Vietnam-Brunei relations to Comprehensive Partnership is an extremely important step, marking a change in both quantity and quality in bilateral relations, demonstrating the common determination of the two countries' senior leaders in deepening cooperation in a practical manner, in line with the new situation as well as the general trend of the region and the world.

Since then, the Vietnam-Brunei Comprehensive Partnership has made many developments on the main pillars of politics-security, trade-investment and people-to-people diplomacy.

The two countries also coordinate closely and effectively at regional and international forums and organizations, especially at ASEAN and the United Nations; and support each other on regional and international issues of mutual concern.

Along with that, economic, trade and investment cooperation between Vietnam and Brunei also continues to develop, becoming the foundation for long-term relations between the two countries. Security and defense cooperation between the two countries also achieved many positive results through the implementation of Memorandums of Understanding on defense cooperation and cooperation in specific fields.

On the other hand, the Vietnamese community in Brunei currently plays an important bridging role, promoting economic, social, cultural and people-to-people exchanges between the two countries.

Vietnamese is currently the only language in Southeast Asia taught at Universiti Brunei Darussalam (UBD), attracting increasing interest from Bruneian students.

The two sides have much potential, opportunities and room to strengthen and deepen bilateral cooperation in the coming time, especially in the fields of renewable energy conversion, green economy, and circular economy, in line with the commitment to reduce emissions and sustainable development. Digital economy, science-technology and innovation are also promising areas of cooperation.

After the welcoming ceremony, President Luong Cuong and King Haji Hassanal Bolkiah led high-ranking delegations from the two countries to hold talks, assess the results of cooperation between the two countries in recent times and propose directions for cooperation in the future./.
