On the afternoon of June 18, President To Lam received Swedish Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary Ann Mawe who came to say goodbye on the occasion of the end of her term of office.
The President congratulated Ambassador Ann Mawe on her successful tenure and her positive contributions to the bilateral relationship. Affirming that the cooperative relationship between the two countries has a long tradition, the President pointed out that Sweden is one of the first European countries to establish relations with Vietnam; at the same time, he highly appreciated the assistance, support and assistance of the Swedish Royal Family, Government and people during the past struggle for national independence, as well as the current process of construction and development of Vietnam.
Through the Ambassador, the President also thanked the King of Sweden for sending a congratulatory message on the occasion of being elected by the National Assembly to hold the position of President of the Socialist Republic of Vietnam.
Thanking the President for taking the time to receive her, Ambassador Ann Mawe expressed her honor to have a working term at a time when the two countries are celebrating the 55th anniversary of diplomatic relations. Ambassador Ann Mawe highly appreciated Vietnam's strong economic development in recent years; emphasizing that over the past half century, the relationship between the two countries has been increasingly consolidated and expanded. The two sides have increased the exchange of high-level delegations and all levels, promoted people-to-people exchanges, especially the bilateral trade turnover has increased gradually over the years.
Emphasizing that Sweden is one of Vietnam's 10 largest partners in the European Union (EU), Ambassador Ann Mawe said that many large Swedish enterprises have invested in Vietnam and many other Swedish enterprises are looking forward to exploring new investment and business opportunities in various fields. The Ambassador said that as one of the leading European countries in innovation and sustainable development, Sweden is eager to cooperate with Vietnam in responding to climate change and green transformation.
Agreeing with Ambassador Ann Mawe’s assessment of the developments in the bilateral relationship, President To Lam was pleased to see that the Vietnam-Sweden cooperation during the Ambassador’s tenure has developed positively in many areas such as politics, economics, trade and investment. To enhance cooperation and promote each other’s potential and strengths, the President suggested that the two sides increase bilateral and multilateral political and diplomatic cooperation activities, including delegation exchanges at all levels, especially in 2024 when the two countries celebrate the 55th anniversary of diplomatic relations.
Recalling that Sweden was the first Western country to establish diplomatic relations with Vietnam and that many projects supported by Sweden have made important contributions to Vietnam's socio-economic development, the President highly appreciated Sweden as one of the early partners to ratify the Vietnam-EU Investment Protection Agreement (EVIPA). The President believes that once ratified and implemented, the EVIPA will bring new momentum to promote investment relations between the two sides and facilitate EU and Swedish enterprises investing and doing business in Vietnam.
The President welcomed Swedish businesses to increase investment in Vietnam in areas of strength such as infrastructure, transportation, green transformation, green technology, renewable energy, urban planning, sustainable development, etc. The President hoped that the two sides would promote people-to-people exchanges through educational, cultural-artistic, sports, tourism, and local cooperation activities to enhance mutual understanding and consolidate the friendship and cooperative relations between the two countries.
The President believes that Ambassador Ann Mawe will have good impressions of the country and people of Vietnam; at the same time, he hopes that the Ambassador, regardless of her position, will always be a close friend, continuing to foster the traditional friendship and good cooperation between Vietnam and Sweden.
Ambassador Ann Mawe sincerely thanked the President and Vietnamese authorities for supporting the Ambassador to complete his duties, thereby contributing to promoting cooperation between the two countries in many fields./.
