Veteran Le Van Phong (born in 1945, residing in Binh Phong hamlet, Chau Thanh commune, Tay Ninh province) has spent more than 10 years caring for the graves of fallen soldiers at Chau Thanh Martyrs' Cemetery (Chau Thanh commune).
In 2016, due to old age and declining health, Mr. Phong was unable to continue this meaningful work. His son, Le Trong Thuong (49 years old), took over, working day and night to look after, clean, and care for the graves of fallen soldiers.
Mr. Le Trong Thuong lights incense at the graves.
Mr. Thuong said: "After retiring, my father accepted the responsibility of looking after and caring for the graves of fallen soldiers at Chau Thanh Martyrs' Cemetery out of loyalty to his comrades. After my father retired, I continued to be involved in this meaningful work."
Accompanying Mr. Thuong in his work as cemetery caretaker is Mr. Truong Minh Thanh (born in 1979, residing in Binh Phong hamlet, Chau Thanh commune). The two men take turns sweeping and cleaning the area around the cemetery, welcoming relatives of fallen soldiers who come to visit the graves. Having worked at the cemetery for nearly 10 years, Mr. Thuong clearly remembers the information and resting place of each fallen soldier.
Whenever visitors come to pay their respects or search for graves, he wholeheartedly helps them. When schools, agencies, and organizations come to light incense and pay tribute to the fallen heroes, Mr. Thuong becomes a "guide," introducing the cemetery and assisting people in lighting incense at the graves.
“The heroic martyrs sacrificed their lives for the independence and freedom of the Fatherland. Therefore, looking after and caring for the martyrs' graves is also my way of expressing my deep gratitude and appreciation to our ancestors. I am very proud of my work and hope to be involved for a long time,” Mr. Thuong shared.
